Want a Cheap Smartphone? Go Get an Invite
You cannot buy a OnePlus One smartphone. To buy one, you need an invitation.
To get an invitation, you need to know someone who has one, or you must
compete for the chance to get an invite.
With its management team carved out of Chinese smartphone maker Oppo last
year, founders including Carl Pei and Pete Lau, have copied the playbook
perfected by nightclub owners around the globe: Put up a velvet rope and
watch the patrons queue. That the velvet rope is actually a tool for
balancing sales with production capacity hasn't hurt the mystique of the
brand.
"We just stumbled across it by accident," Pei said by phone from Shenzhen,
where his team is based. "We didn't design it to be a marketing tool, but we
now see the effect of it from a marketing standpoint as well."
Their first product, an Android smartphone with 64 gigabytes of storage,
started volume shipments in June and sells exclusively online for $349.
Exclusively, of course, to those with an invite. To coincide with Black
Friday, Pei says the company is releasing its 16Gb version globally for $299.
A quick look at the design and specs sheet shows a device not too dissimilar
to those offered by Samsung, HTC, Xiaomi, or even Oppo: a Qualcomm
Snapdragon processor, 5.5-inch screen, front and back camera. What Pei says
is different about their approach is that they've scaled back, both on price
and software.
Trimming margins allows OnePlus to cut back the retail price, while it's
also decided to forego a lot of the bloatware that gets put on to phones.
OnePlus, Pei says, is aiming for a fast and sleek Android OS.
Sales this year will fall just shy of a million units. Not Apple-sized
numbers, but not bad for a one-year old company with 300 workers (and
another 200 outsource customer service staff).
OnePlus isn't a spin-off of Oppo, says Pei, who himself worked at Oppo for a
year. It just happens to have 15 founding employees who came from Oppo,
many of Oppo's same investors, and have its product contract-manufactured in
Oppo's factories, Pei said.
At least some of that is changing. It's in talks with Silicon Valley
investors for a second-round of funding that will likely close by year-end,
and they're scouting around for an alternative contract manufacturer because
Oppo is running out of capacity to service both themselves and OnePlus.
The product line will also expand, with one or two more devices next year
and plans to venture into wearables or Internet-of-Things hardware, Pei said
without giving details.
While OnePlus is expanding and developing as fast as China itself, one thing
's not changing: the Velvet Rope stays. | u****d 发帖数: 23938 | | i***h 发帖数: 12655 | 3 涨了就没劲了
