Sprint unveiled plans to offer unlimited voice or texting prepaid wireless
plans at Wal-Mart Stores for $20 a month through its payLo by Virgin Mobile
brand.

Sprint Corp. unveiled plans to offer unlimited voice or texting prepaid
wireless plans at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for $20 a month through its payLo by
Virgin Mobile brand.
The monthly plans, available starting Saturday to customers who purchase a
Kyocera Kona or Samsung Montage device, cost $20 for either unlimited voice
minutes with 50 text messages, or unlimited texting with 50 minutes of voice
, Sprint said.
“The no-contract market continues to grow, most visibly with smartphones,
but many customers find value with unlimited plans without the extra bells
and whistles,” said Angela Rittgers, vice president of marketing for Sprint
’s prepaid group.
Wal-Mart, meanwhile, already offers cellphone plans through major U.S.
carriers, including its own Wal-Mart Family Mobile Plan, launched in 2010.
The Wal-Mart-branded plan runs on T-Mobile USA’s network, and offers a
range of low-priced cellphones without a lengthy contract for a flat monthly
fee.
On its website, Wal-Mart advertises its “lowest price unlimited plans”
through T-Mobile at $39.88 a month for the first line for unlimited talk,
text and web for up to 2.5 gigabytes of 3G data. Without web access, the
price is $24.88. Plan costs for both options drop by $5 a month when
additional lines are added.
Once a niche product for those who couldn’t afford contracts, the prepaid
option gained popularity during the recession, as lost jobs and cut wages
meant people couldn’t commit to signing multiyear contracts.
The allure comes from cheaper rates, no contracts and no termination fees,
though subscribers have to forgo access to the most advanced phones and the
subsidies that make them affordable.
