Nokia will on Tuesday name India-born Rajeev Suri as its next CEO and
outline its new strategy with a focus on its networks equipment business,
Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat said on Friday, quoting unmanned sources.
Suri, 46, has been widely considered the leading candidate to succeed
Stephen Elop as CEO as he has metamorphozed the network division Nokia
Solutions and Networks (NSN) into a global giant —with revenues in excess
of 11 billion euros in 2013 — through a drastic restructuring plan and by
ditching unprofitable businesses.
Though he is seen within global tech circles as a turnaround specialist, the
Espoo, Finland-based Suri would now face the daunting task of leading Nokia
in its new avatar without the mobile phone division.
Born in 1967, he graduated as an electronics and telecommunications engineer
from Mangalore University and is one of the few top bosses in the business
world who doesn't boast of a management degree. Suri is known to be a
fitness freak, who hits the gym in his free time, apart from his love for
books, music and tennis.
He had moved to Nokia in 1995, and prior to this, he also had a stint in
India where he worked with ICL and the RPG Group in corporate business
development for new ventures and strategic planning.
But the real calling for Suri came in late 2009 when he was appointed the
CEO of the equipment division, Nokia Siemens Networks, which became Nokia
Solutions and Networks (NSN) in August last year after Nokia bought out the
German partner's stake.
Suri has cut more than 25,000 jobs at NSN over the past few years as he
relentlessly worked towards turning around the company's fortunes and
growing revenues through restructuring and fresh strategies. In an interview
to the BBC in 2011, he described the layoffs as "regrettable but necessary"
to improve profitability and for cash generation.
Nokia's finance chief Timo Ihamuotila was also in the race for the top
position at the Finnish company. But Suri's contacts in the telecom industry
and his vast experience at selling network gear such as base stations and
antennas (to mobile carriers) are seen as his biggest assets.
His Indian lineage may have proved to be handy to clinch the top job as
India is seen as one of the biggest growth market for new mobile network
infrastructure, considering that the country is transitioning from 2G
networks to 3G and the next-generation 4G.
Suri and his wife Nina are parents to two sons and before settling in
Finland, he has lived across many countries that include Kuwait, UK, Nigeria
, Germany and Singapore.
When chosen to lead a leaner and cash-rich Nokia (a big portion of money
coming from the sale of the mobile division), Suri faces a challenging task
of finding a new relevance and calling for the Finnish company that has seen
several transformations in the past that included selling switches, rubber
boots, toilet paper, cables, computers, mobile devices to telecom
infrastructure. |
