memory their phones have never enters their mind, and it only ever becomes a
problem when one day they suddenly don’t have enough – up until that
point, though, everything’s gravy. Phones are getting better and better at
multitasking, so hitting that limit through regular app use isn’t a big
concern, but it can play a role when it comes to compatibility with future
platform updates. The day will eventually come when 1GB is seen as the
minimum acceptable level, and 2GB will seem less and less like a safe,
future-proofed solution. When will we see smartphones with even more RAM? If
SK Hynix has its way, we could be looking at 4GB phones within a year.
SK Hynix has a new 1GB LPDDR3 component that’s stackable, reaching a
maximum capacity of 4GB in a single package. With a low profile, this chip
would be a prime fit for smartphones, giving it an advantage over bulkier
4GB solutions from other memory manufacturers.
This component in particular is already under production in sampling
quantities, giving OEMs a head start at building phones around it. SK Hynix
plans to ramp things up to full speed closer to the end of the year.
