q*n 发帖数: 1203 | 15 I don't get that from the outside article, maybe there is some context i am
missing: is it untouchable because it's a special natural wonder? then El
Cap and many other rocks fit into the category too.
i think the damage is particularly significant because the rock is extremely
soft and delicate, one of potter's friend was first a supporter than a
strong critic after it is believed that potter used top rope to rehearsal
the climb thus left rope mark near top of the rock.
untouchables,

f********t 发帖数: 4574 | 20 It is one thing you have to hammer a few pitons into a big wall, it is
another to climb a delicate formation to show off.
Think about it, sponsored by Patagonia, beside free gears and sponsored
trips, you get 50-70K per year just for climbing. There are so many great
climbs in the world, why would you climb that damn arch? He showed such poor
judgement, I would kick him out of my program just for that.

q*n 发帖数: 1203 | 22 We are talking about "untouchable" in a spiritual sense, damage to the
rock is a seperate issue. Besides, potter claims he climbed the arch
in the "purest" form, even going to the extend of avoiding certain kind
of handholds. As for "showing off", i understand climbers have the urge
to climb beautiful rocks, it seems unfair to suggest some climbers or
type of climbs to be ostentatious or less noble than others.

f********t 发帖数: 4574 | 23 Spiritual value varies from person to person, but physical damage is real
and permanent. Delicate arch simply won't sustain as much damage as El Cap.
It is not a matter whether it is noble, it is a matter if it is sustainable.
Climbers have to control their urges and make good judgements. They can't
climb whatever they want to, they are not monkeys after all.

c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 25 I don't know much about the background and I don't really care that much.
Climbing is about having fun not about criticizing anyone or any style of
climbing.
That being said, El Cap has been beat up badly historically but modern
climbers all try to avoid using pins. Clean aid has been a trend for some
years now. What's more, El Cap is granite and can take a lot of abuse.
I don't have problem with red pointing. However, if he lied about it, I
would lose a lot of respect for him.
