今天去看医生的时候还问了问。。。医生说他的病人也大概
是1/4的人才弄，而且还算比例高的了。
这个东西就是保存STEM CELL的， 就是BABY出生的时候，
从脐带那里取出一些BLOOD，进行处理，保留STEM CELL。 如果小孩以后
生大病或者家人生大病，也许可以用上的说。 |

1. cost/benefit ratio太低，同样的钱花在其他地方，比如换个好点的car seat
救命的概率更大。
2. 青春期之前牙根取stem cell，比这个更容易。
3. 现在生物技术发展了，都iPS了，这个stem cell的意义就更小了。
4. 有些人说家里有遗传病所以要留，这个就更加荒谬了，如果以后得了遗传病，
你留的stem cell一样有突变。

the money is not an issue.
2 and 4: That's exactly the reason to keep cord blood. The gene
expression is impacted by the environment. The cord blood collected at
birth has less chances of being contaminated by the diseases developed
later in life, while the adult cells could.
3. Since iPSCs can only be produced with high efficiency at this time
using genetic modifications, they are generally predicted to be less
safe and more tumorigenic. All the genes that have been shown to promote
iPSC formation have also been linked to cancer in one way or another. A
non-genetic method of producing iPSCs has been demonstrated using
recombinant proteins, but its efficiency was quite low.
Overall, cord blood banking is a faith based program. You will have to
put faith into the medical science to be developed so well that it can
treat more diseases. Otherwise, the probably of saving life is really
really low. On the other end, the medical science wouldn't be so
advanced that it doesn't need stem cell at all. So the protection is
really limited.

Once the blood is donated, it loses all identifying information after a
short period of initial testing. Families are not able to retrieve their
own blood after it has been donated.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists 2006 opinion
states, "There is still insufficient evidence to recommend directed
commercial cord blood collection and stem-cell storage in low-risk
families."
The policy of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada
(SOGC) supports public cord blood banking (similar to collection and
banking of other blood products, i.e. altruistic, anyone can use it), as
well as stating it should be considered under certain circumstances.
SOGC Clinical Practice Guidelines, No. 156, March 2005.Umbilical Cord
Blood Banking: Implications for Perinatal Care Providers
The policy of the American Academy of Pediatrics policy states that
"private storage of cord blood as 'biological insurance' is unwise"
unless there is a family member with a current or potential need to
undergo a stem cell transplantation.
Similarly, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists does
not recommend private cord blood banking.
Private storage of one's own cord blood is unlawful in Italy and France,
and it is discouraged in some other European states.
The American Academy of Pediatrics states that private cord blood
banking is generally not recommended unless there is a family history of
specific genetic diseases.
The American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation states that
public donation of cord blood is encouraged where possible, the
probability of using one's own cord blood is very small, and therefore
storage of cord blood for personal use is not recommended, and family
member banking (collecting and storing cord blood for a family member)
is recommended when there is a sibling with a disease that may be
treated successfully with allogeneic transplant.

to relatives with pre-existing conditions, not to the donors. So your
doctor's advice is not sound. In fact, why do people ask OB such
questions? They should ask doctors who really do stem cell transplants for
their opinion.
