but i find successful ppl don't really care about schools. i've got a
chinese prof whose daughter got into a ivy league school and dropped out.
her parent went livid. but the girl just lived by herself and one day maybe
she got hit by sth -- who knows what happened -- she decided to go back to
college and finished her undergrad education and went on to a law school and
became a lawyer.
so it really doesn't matter whether the parents plan it all out for kids or
not. kids here have a lot of freedom and if they have strong will, they can
pretty much do anything they want.

and other sources of financing is available to all GOOD, Admitted kids.
That's the so called Need-blind admission.
supposedly admission decision is made before any consideration of money.
It's still being touted every once in a while, but in reality has become a
thing of the past.
Not anymore.

parents have conflicts with their kids because the parents want to lay out a
nice smooth path for their kids without thinking about what the kids really
want. It's what they want their kids to be. As a teenager raised in the
American school systems, he/she objects the parents' will and tries to fight
for his/her own, he/she rebels. This is one of the biggest generation gaps
between immigrant parents and their American raised kids. Not long ago, a
chinese father wanted to jump off the verrazano bridge was hugely caused by
this generation conflict as well.

need financial aids or other sources of finance. When I was in school, one
of my friends borrowed entire tuition for four years, it's a huge burden. He
always said it's only a number on the paper. Well, if I were him, I would
rather go to another college.

are a poor kid and your parents don't make too much. You are better off than
a lot of mid-class kids. Once you are accepted you don't need to worry
about the cost, the college endowment takes care of that. If you are a US
legal resident, the federal and state government set aside of certain money
for your undergrad education.

academics but for religious principles...

concerns other than tuition affordability: can my kids take the peer
pressure of family background? Do I want to send them to boarding schools?
Probably not for me and my kids. If I exclude those elite ones, I don't see
huge difference between good private schools and Scarsdale/Bronxville, and
here comes the invisible hand of Adam Smith: if I have only one child,
Hackley is one of my options because it gives me a bigger selection of house

I was a little concerned until Deerfield did pop up dead last at #20.
But the ranking is controversial.
All these schools are top top top. To try to nudge one against another is
not a popular thing to do.
One way or another.
They should be ranked by endowment size only.
