introductions to whom will go to ABQ soon.
First, please forgive my bad English. Just because it is difficult to key in
Chinese in this computer.
I left ABQ two years ago, there may be something change. Just based on my
memory. Your friends fro CSFA and 华人教会 will give you more detail when
you come.
1. Who can I ask for help when I arrive?

It is UNM CSFA 新墨西哥大学中国学生学者联谊会
In AQB, both UNM CSFA and 华人教会 can pick up you at airport and help you
arrange couple days rest and help you find a apartment. They are both
trustful.
It is a tradition in AQB. As they got help from older, they try to help
newer.
At least in the years when I was AQB, they did years after years. I have
never hear any negative news like happened at other place.
CSFA are mostly students of UNM and 华人教会 are most elder people who work
at ABQ. Hence help you get help from CSFA may not as much as from 华人教会
although most time they already do their best.
However, if you are not ready to believe in Christ, maybe it is more
comfortable to contact with CSFA. No, I don't mean 华人教会 help you in
order to make you believe. They really just try help. Just they are so nice
and so warm, you may feel some sorry if you will have to keep refusing their
invitation in future.
For the first couple days, if you contact with CSFA and 华人教会, they will
help arrange a temporary stay for you. Usually,you will stay at either old
ABQer's house/Apartment or apartment of new ABQer who come first. CSFA and
华人教会 will also help to find some used furniture (like table/mattress and
so on) for those need. They collect these when old ABQer don't need them
and store them for newer.
It is a good tradition in AQB, old-ABQer help new ABQer and, when new-ABQer
become old-AQBer, they help new. Hence, (I don't want to make this like a
memo), please remember old friends' help and please be ready to help new
friend in future. I have seen this tradition carried and past years and I
believe it will be continued.
2. Where can I rent apartment?
For those will work at AQB and have no financial pressure, you may like to
rent a apartment at northeast area. They are mostly good. Maybe a little
difference (you can tell from price difference), but all of them are much
cheaper and much better than SF, LA, SD, NY, NJ.... (not compare to TX,
please). As summer is really hot and long, you may like to find one with
swimming pool.
For student, I assume you will not like put $800/month on lease. You can
easily to find some cheap apartments at about 3~5 mile away from UNM campus.
If you like to stay somewhere you can walk to UNM, you can find between
Gold ave/Coal and Central st/Santa Clara. Please do not choose apartment at
west of I25 (downtown direction). I believe both CSFA and 华人教会 can give
you detail information. Don't worry about it.
If you are married student or postdoc, you may apply UNM family house. It is
near to South park lot and UNM research park. Walk to main campus need
maybe 10 or 15 mins. It is a closed apartment with old houses but good
neigbor (only UNMer can apply. Hence you don't need worry about your kids).
Only thing you need pay attention is, there is some apartment hard get sun
shine due to design issue. It is better you have some friend walk you
around and find which one is vacant. You can fill in which apartment you
prefer when you fill the application form.
Postdoc need register 3 credit if they would like to live in family house.
As old police, Posdoc have 3 free credit per year. You can try find if it is
still there.
3. Where do my kids go to daycare/school?
For daycare, if you work/study at UNM, I will recommend UNM Children daycare
for you. It is one of best ( may be just best) daycare at AQB. Definitely
outstanding teachers and outstanding facility. Also,it has discount rate for
student. If you are postdoc and your wife will be a housewife, you may have
your wife take 6 credit class and she can have the discount rate. Because
you are employee, you wife have discount on tuition and overall you get
balance saving of discount daycare rate - tuition fee (based on UNM police
when I was there, please check the current police).
for school, you may like to check this website for locate school you like.
www.greatschools.org ( you may use zipcode 87106 if you will be at UNM)
Monte Vista Elementary School is one good choice if you stay near to UNM or
work at UNM. Please keep in mind that Monte Vista Elementary School had very
strange district assignment. If I am right, you need be at south of lead/
zunni. Please check with AQB public school department.
Bandelier Elementary School is also good. It had gift program. You need live
at south of Santa Clara (?) and east of university (?)
One good thing is, ABQ is a same big school district. Hence you can transfer
from your local school to any other school if you have enough reason. Work/
study at UNM campus is a good reason. What you need to do is, before new
year register, usually in Feb or march ( I cannot remember exactly date, but
you can find from the public department (www.aps.edu it is near to the
Colorado mall), fill a transfer form and submit to the APS as early as you
can. It is first come first serve and usually there will be a really long
line if you arrive late.
For high school. Academy is a very good private high school and it has
scholar for who do not have enough income. If your family income less than
40K, you can pay very little. However, you kids need be really good. They
have entry exam every year.
4. Do I need a car?
yes, you will find it. AQB is big but has good transportation system. You
may drive anywhere in city in 30 min (not between 5PM to 6PM). Drive a car
is easy at AQB as there are good road and polite drivers on road (except
after 5PM on Friday. There will be a lot of DWIs). Of course, if you really
don't care the time on way, the city bus can bring you to anywhere.
5. Where I can bring my kids to go at weekend in City?
ABQ has a very good zoo, a very good Aquarium and a botanical garden. Best
way is to buy a anual pass. You can easy to find their locations at www.cabq
.gov/biopark.
At downtown, there is Tingley Beach with regularly stocked trout and catfish
, you can fish there. A good point is, there is a specific pond for kids <13
. Much easy to catch fish there. Adult need a fishing license.
I-explore, the best child science museum I found in USA. My son still miss
it after years. You will feel it is good to have a family annual pass.
There is a museum next to the Iexpore, your kid's school will bring them
there. You don't really need buy ticket unless you like to see some good
dinosaur.
Sandia peak. Good place to hike and ski.
6. Where I can go at weekend?
depends, you can go to central ave at downtown. Or you can go to some casino
near to ABQ.
7. Is there Chiese store?
Yes, at least you can try 99B and Jingshan. Talin is more like Asian store,
you can find Japanese/Indian.. and price is higher than 99B.
8. Costco. If you are from China, maybe you are not familar with it. It is
much like Hualian and Sams club. I recommend Costco. There are two, east and
north. Sams club is not as good as Costco. You can share a membership with
a friend. Only thing is Costco mail out coupon book couple times in year.
Good to share the book.
9. Walmart
There are many Walmart in ABQ. Some rather small. Zuni and Eubank are good.
10. Bank
If you don't mind big bank, you can use Eubank federal union. Interest rate
is better than big Bank and you can easy find ATM at UNM and other place in
ABQ.
10. Is there Chinese restaurant?
yes, many but only a few are real Chiese. You may try "Chopstick" and "east
ocean" for menu and evergreen for buffet. Maybe there is some new opening
in past years. Just ask.
11. Mexican food
I suggest you would like to try the Mexican food in a grocry store
Pros Ranch Markets, drive along central ave and over river
4201 Central Avenue Northwest.
You will not regret that. It is best Mexican food in ABQ.
