There were a number of factors leading to the downfall of Brady Hoke as
Michigan's football coach.
By far the biggest: The inability of Hoke and his coaching staff to develop
an outstanding quarterback.
In this era of college football, of spread offenses and teams combining for
close to or more than 100 points in a growing number of games, winning is
often as simple as having the best quarterback.
Even programs using conventional offensive schemes have joined the fray.
Nick Saban joined the movement at Alabama by hiring offensive coordinator
Lane Kiffin, who was decidedly controversial as a head coach at Tennessee
and Southern Cal, but not because he doesn't have a creative football mind.
Michigan got behind the curve by hiring the man Kiffin replaced, Doug
Nussmeier.
Did you watch the Alabama vs. Auburn game? Blake Sims, Alabama's quarterback
, has made extraordinary progress under Kiffin. The Crimson Tide won a 55-44
shootout.
Michigan QB Devin Gardner, if anything, regressed under Nussmeier.
Former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh, who completely turned around the
football fortunes at Stanford before leaving for the NFL's San Francisco, is
the fan's choice to be the Wolverines' next head coach. But was it Harbaugh
at Stanford or his QB Andrew Luck?
Oregon has Marcus Mariota, Florida State Jameis Winston and TCU Trevone
Boykin. Florida was really good when Tim Tebow was the quarterback. Not very
good since. Why did Mississippi State suddenly become a national title
contender? Dak Prescott is the QB. Everybody talks about how Michigan State'
s success under Mark Dantonio has been because of tough defense, but his
first two quarterbacks, Brian Hoyer and Kirk Cousins, are playing in the NFL
. So will current Spartans' QB Connor Cook.
Hoke was 11-2 his first season at Michigan primarily because of quarterback
Denard Robinson, who combined for 36 touchdowns passing (20) and rushing (16
). Gardner had 10 touchdown passes and four rushing touchdowns in '14.
And Robinson's trended downward from his last season statistically under his
previous head coach at UM, Rich Rodriguez, now at Arizona and the Pac 12
Coach of the Year.
Where there has been confusion is the idea a great quarterback is recruited
when that's only part of the equation. It's about molding that talent once
on campus.
The departing Gardner had tools. So does Shane Morris. They were 4- and 5-
star recruits. Mariota, Boykin and Prescott were all 3-star recruits. So, by
the way, was Johnny Manziel.
The situation of Hoke not being able to develop highly-recruited
quarterbacks was emblematic of his issues overall. Look at the offensive
line. Tackles Taylor Lewan (first round by Tennessee) and Michael Schofield
(third round by Denver) were early picks in last spring's NFL Draft. Yet,
somehow this past season the offensive line was supposed to somehow be
better because of addition by subtraction. It wasn't. There were plenty of
so-called “blue chip” recruits available, but collectively they couldn't
play a lick under Hoke.
For whatever reason, Michigan became the place for some of the best players
in the high school ranks to come and prove to be vastly overrated. Think of
the thrill on the signing days Michigan landed running back Derrick Green
and cornerback Jabril Peppers. Look where they are now.
OK, they both got hurt, but were they nearly what was expected before
suffering the injuries?
There are many questions that need to be asked during Michigan's search for
a new football coach. Recruiting is important, obviously, but not
necessarily to the extent Michigan has traditionally made it. More important
is a coach's ability to assemble a quality staff that is able to implement
a head coach's system in a manner that players improve markedly individually
– and therefore collectively.
And it begins at quarterback.
Because in the end, that was Brady Hoke's big failure.
In the process, his four years at Michigan became a study in how in college
football having a top-end quarterback isn't everything.
It's the only thing. | h**********9 发帖数: 3252 | 2 这文章可以再发表一次,将Brady Hoke改成Bo Pelini.

确实,教练的思维上该改变了,否则跟不上形势的发展步伐。
