MSU win will help Michigan's BCS chances, analyst says

In an otherwise ho-hum final charge to the BCS bowl pairings, which will be
released Sunday night, Michigan has added some spice.
The Wolverines are 10-2 after beating Ohio State in the regular-season
finale but dropped one spot in the BCS standings to No. 16. Michigan remains
in the pool of candidates for an at-large BCS bowl berth, but needs help
from several teams this weekend to jump into the top 14 to qualify.
"This is the least amount of drama in the final weekend of the BCS, and
arguably the most dramatic thing going is this question of whether Michigan
will get in," Brad Edwards, ESPN's BCS analyst, told The Detroit News. "
Everyone is waiting to see if the 16th will move up to 14th. I'm not sure
there's anything more compelling than whether Michigan gets in."
But Edwards has his doubts, because the Wolverines, who do not play this
weekend, must rely on other teams.
"My best guess is that they won't," Edwards said.
Several bowl projections by national analysts, including Edwards, have had
the Wolverines in the Sugar Bowl, a BCS bowl. That would be a remarkable
turnaround for a program that went 15-22 the previous three years and made
only one bowl before first-year Michigan coach Brady Hoke led the team to a
10-2 season this year.
"I think this team is now very much in the national hunt, and we'll see how
the BCS standings come out," Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said
after Saturday's game.
Edwards believes the magic formula for Michigan is three-pronged.
Michigan should root for Michigan State (No. 13 in the BCS standings) to
beat Wisconsin (No. 15) in the Big Ten championship game, because U-M lost
to MSU during the regular season, and this would help the Wolverines'
strength of schedule. Michigan should also root for LSU to rout Georgia (No.
14) in the SEC title game, and he also thinks Texas beating Baylor (No. 17)
would help Michigan's cause. He doesn't think an Oklahoma (No. 10) loss to
Oklahoma State (No. 3) would drop the Sooners enough.
"There's a better chance for Michigan if Wisconsin loses, but I'm not saying
no way it won't happen (for U-M) if the Spartans lose," Edwards said.
If Wisconsin routs Michigan State, that also could benefit Michigan, if
Georgia and Baylor are beaten soundly. His concern with Baylor is that if
the Bears win, voters could get an over-inflated opinion and could pass
Michigan. But if Georgia plays a competitive game against LSU and loses,
Edwards believes the Bulldogs could actually move up.
So, Edwards thinks Michigan fans should stick to the plan of rooting for LSU
, rooting for Texas and rooting for MSU.
"There are three things they need to happen," Edwards said. "If they don't
get one, they might be able to survive. If they don't get two, they're done."
Should Michigan bump into the top 14 and qualify for a BCS, it's a no-
brainer for the Sugar Bowl, Edwards says.
"If Michigan is in, there's no question they're the team to take if they are
there," Edwards said. "The Sugar Bowl wants to sell tickets. If they can't
get an SEC team, they would want Michigan because they could sell a lot of
tickets."
The Wolverines likely will be headed to the Capital One Bowl in Orlando or
the Outback Bowl in Tampa if they don't qualify or a BCS bowl.

As ESPN craig james mentioned, arky lost to no 1 and no 2 team in the nation
, they should be no 3.
um should thank bsu for beating ug. all non sec fans should appreciate bsu's
effort. But of course, this georgia tema is much different than the one

if lsu and osu beat gerogia and ou respectively, i dont see how these two 3-
loss teams can hold their position before michigan. not to mention there is
for sure a 3-loss team coming out of the bigten ccg.

could be still ahead of U.M. Thus, the falling of b1g ccg loser will be the
only team that's behind Michigan, but Michigan needs to move up at least two
spots.

BCS bowl, that would be a nice bonus, but without it, I won't complain.
Remember just 10 months ago, we were saying he might be given a few more
years than RR because he is a "Michigan man"; we were saying if RR stayed he
could have made it 9-3 and Brady Hoke might not be able to do that in his
first season...
Remember when we were 6-0, everyone was saying Michigan has played nobody,
has a weak schedule, no quality wins and etc etc; I am just glad that 4 more
schools were added to the squad of "nobody" at the end of the season.
