Have the day off so I thought I'd gather some numbers and do a little
research. Just looked at historical recruiting classes on Rivals.com and I
would encourage others to do the same. To those who claim RR had a bare
cupboard when he came here please take a look at the following. Note, for
those teams not rated in the top 50 each year since 2006, I gave them a very
liberal rated of #51 for the years when they were outside of the top 50.
The teams who had a rating outside the top 50 in any 1 year are marked with
a ">=" prior to their average rating over a period of the last 5 years. For
some interesting comparisons below are the average team recruiting class
ratings (lowest is best) over the past 5 years.
Ohio State Average Rating: 11.8 (set = 12, 15, 4, 3, 25)
Univ of Mich Average Rating: 12.6 (set = 13, 12, 10, 8, 20)
Penn State Average Rating: 21.8 (set = 6, 24, 43, 24, 12)
Mich State Average Rating: 33.8 (set = 33, 42, 47, 17, 30)
Stanford Average Rating: >= 39.6 (set = NR, NR, 50, 20, 26)
Wisconsin Average Rating: >= 41.8 (set = 40, 34, 41, 43, NR)
Iowa Average Rating: >= 42.2 (set = 39, 28, NR, NR, 42)
So what's my point? Its simple, take a look at average rating of the other
team. UM has a better rating than all by wide margins except OSU. And, the
comparison to OSU is so small it can hardly justify a 30 point embarassing
loss this year.
Additionally, look at the wide differences in rating compared to PSU, MSU,
Wisc and Iowa. Folks, UM was PASTED by each of these opponents this year and
last year too!
Lastly, look at what Stanford has been able to do with only the last 3
classes even rated in the top 50.
No, when I look at numbers like these, (and I think DB is probably doing
this too) I ask, if UM has such high ratings in recruiting versus these
opponents, then why would we get beaten so badly? Add to that question, if
UM has such excellent facilities, why would we get beaten so badly on the
field?
Getting down to brass tacks, there realistically can only be 2 answers:
#1 - The recruiting ratings are bogus - my guess is this is the one RR would
have us believe.
#2 - Bad coaching
Lets look at #1. Below are the previous 3 national champs and their average
Rivals recruiting rating over the 5 years previous to winning the national
championship:
2009-Alabama-avg=8.2
2008-Florida-avg=5.6
2007-LSU-avg=7.2
And this years two top teams have the follwoing averages:
2010-Oregon-avg=24.8
2010-Auburn-avg=12.0
Hmmmm, seems like the recruiting ratings are pretty accurate to me.
Now lets look at #2. UM has had an average recruiting rating better than PSU
, MSU, Iowa and Wisconsin over the same time period - 2006-2010. Who can say
that each of those teams did not make UM look silly this year? The games
were laughers folks. I am sorry to say, but we must face reality. Our teams
looked very badly out played and out coached in each of the the games where
we played one of those teams. The games were not close, and frankly
embarrassing, period. Furthermore, over the same recruiting time period we
were virtually on par with OSU in recruiting. However, we were so badly out
played and out coached when we played OSU , I personnally had to stop
watching. Stanford, has only been rated in the top 50 in recruiting the past
3 years, yet, they are ranked #4 this year in the BCS standings.
Additionally, we have had to endure NCAA violations that have NEVER happened
at UM over its entire football history. UM has fielded the worst defenses
in the HISTORY of UM football over RR's coaching timeframe. The special
teams look like they were not even considered in pre-season preparation
practices. The offense is exciting to watch, but it obvious the better
defensive teams have their number as they struggle miserably against them.
There is a overweighted dependency on one guy who in all likeihood could get
hurt badly with all the abuse he has to take in this offense.
Folks, It is not a matter of an empty cupboard, it is lack of good coaching,
period. The numbers do not lie and neither do your eyes. | g*********d 发帖数: 8125 | 2 R2 offense talent is no doubt
R2 defense difficiency is very clear

A head coach must be a A GREAT LEADER. He should hire strong coordinators to
handle the X and O planning on each side of the ball and have good teachers
as position coaches. There is not one single successful business or team in
America that does not reflect the leader at the top. I urge anyone
commenting in favor of RR at this time to provide examples of GREAT
LEADERSHIP within M football that even remotely offset the numerous
leadership shortfalls that are so clearly evident… poor handling of media,
lack of "understanding" of compliance, inability to generate support from
key fans, poor transition with both coaches and players, ongoing coach and
player turnover, lack of player development, coaching nepotism, and poor
discipline on the field. While I agree that the record has improved, I just
don’t see the overall quality of play improving anywhere near what you
should see in 3 years which is a reflection of poor leadership. I can’t see
us beating (or even competing with) MSU or OSU next year…. Which should
clearly be the measure. I know that DB has visibility to a lot more factors
than these to measure RR leadership and if he chooses to keep RR, I have to
assume he sees some measure of leadership that fans can’t see.
For what it is worth, I LOVED RR when we hired him. I thought M football was
due for a shift in thinking and a younger head coach was needed. Three
years is plenty of time to see that RR is not an effective leader. For those
that are scared to make a change… a good leader will take advantage of the
talents in house while making subtle changes. M football (as per recruiting
class rankings) has plenty of talent on the bench to win 7 games no matter
what X and O “system” in use. We have better talent than all but 1 team on
our schedule. We need a good leader to maximize the talent!!!
RR is an offensive genius and will make some team a great offensive
coordinator…. I truly don’t believe that he is a strong enough leader to
be a consistent winner as a head coach.
IMO, the fact that DB has not strongly defended RR since OSU game is very
telling. He spent plenty of time with this team and has evaluated many
leaders in his life to need another 15 practices and a game to measure RR
leadership skills. He is looking for a new coach right now. However, the
best leaders all have great games left to play and he is showing them
respect. I will be shocked if we do not have a new coach in 2011 even if
poor timing costs us a recruiting class. Losing a few recruits is truly a
small price to pay for finding them a proper leader.
