Detroit News columnist clarifies: Just 'my opinion' that Rodriguez will be
fired Monday

After commenting on a Lansing radio station that a conversation with
University of Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon made him “all the
more certain” that football coach Rich Rodriguez would be fired Monday,
Detroit News sports columnist Lynn Henning clarified his statements in an
interview with the Daily late Tuesday night.
Since the radio appearance this afternoon, Henning’s comments have started
to pick up some steam online, appearing on message boards and on Twitter.
“Had zero to do with anything Dave said to me,” Henning said of his
comments. “Anything said to me was in the confines of that story today.
“There was nothing he said other than what I directly quoted him as saying
today.”
The News published a lengthy column from Henning this morning that was based
on a sit-down interview the columnist had with Brandon on Friday. The top
half of the column focused on how Brandon is leading the athletic department
and the decision that lies before him of whether to retain Rodriguez.
Henning appeared on The Huge Show on The Game 730 AM WVFN to talk about the
story and Michigan and Michigan State football.
During the radio interview, Henning said he “was convinced before that
conversation (with Brandon) that Rich Rodriguez will be fired on Monday and
that Jim Harbaugh will be hired.”
“I am convinced all the more after that conversation even though Dave said
nothing — even to the point of not mentioning Rich Rodriguez’s name —
about that situation,” Henning said.
Henning continued in the radio interview to say that he was “deferential”
to Brandon’s desire to avoid discussing Rodriguez and admitted that he didn
’t press the athletic director on it.
“But I think on Monday, Michigan is going to be naming a new football coach
in large part because they are going to get annihilated Saturday by the
Buckeyes,” he added on WVFN.
Speaking to the Daily, Henning clarified that his comments were based
strictly on his own speculation.
“I made it clear on the interview that I was just offering my opinion. And
my opinion has not changed during really the duration of this season. And it
had nothing to do with my conversation with Dave Brandon on Friday,” he
said.
He later added: “It isn’t based on any information. It’s not based on any
disclosures. It certainly isn’t based on anything that I heard from Dave
Brandon on Friday.”
“I’m not reporting that this is going to happen. I’m telling you that I
think it will happen for the reasons that I think are pretty compelling
right now.”
Henning pointed to the team’s play in recent weeks and the fact that
Brandon has yet to say that Rodriguez will be the team’s coach next year as
the basis for his opinion. |

of MSU and WMU fan base. Every time Huge interview DB, he always asked how
many wins will DB keep RR, then DB just fight back saying there is not such
thing. |
