A martial arts period-piece taking its characters from Jin Yong's (a.k.a. Loui
s Cha) novel The Eagle Shooting Heroes, Ashes of Time is, ostensibly, the aban
doned sequel to Days of Being Wild. As Tony Rayns notes, most of the cast and
all of the themes in the latter film are merely transplanted into new surround
ings and a different genre (15), in a manner much more ambitious and visually
