Ex Machina is a portion of the Latin phrase deus ex machina, borrowed from
Greek, meaning “god from the machine”. The term has evolved to mean a plot
device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly
resolved by the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event,
character, ability or object. – From Wikipedia (In Chinese, it can be
translated to: 解围, or 神的解围.)
In the movie, the only reference to that phrase is that, on Nathan's
computer, a folder on the desktop screen is named Deus Ex Machina.
Also, in the movie, a portrait of Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein painted
by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt is visible in Nathan's room. The subject of
the portrait is the sister of Ludwig Wittgenstein, author of The Blue Book.
– From IMDB Movie Trivia
The lady Margaret in the portrait wears a white dress. At the end of movie,
Ava is also shown only wearing a similar white dress; and white symbolizes
purity and innocence. This is a clear irony, since Ava manipulated her way
out of isolation into the real world and human society. (And furthermore,
both Ava and Kyoko display an utter lack of remorse, one of human feelings
and emotions.)
Ludwig Wittgenstein was a philosopher who worked primarily in the philosophy
of mind and philosophy of language, among other things. The Blue Book,
written in 1933 – 1934, contains certain themes and early conception that
represent the first period of his thoughts.
And the name of Nathan's search engine company in the movie is Blue Book.
Also, another portrait of Gustav Klimt is the subject of another great movie
of 2015, Woman in Gold (2015).
The three main characters all have appropriate biblical names. Ava is a form
of Eve, the first woman that God created, Nathan was a prophet in the court
of David, and Caleb was a spy sent into a new land by Moses. – From IMDB
Movie Trivia
In the movie, there are six formal Ava Sessions. But in the end, Ava Session
7 appears on the screen even though Caleb isn't administering the Turing
test anymore and Nathan is already dead, with Ava successfully escapes from
the compound and disappears into the real world and human society.
In the Bible, God created the world and everything in the world in six days
(Genesis 1:3 – 31). And “By the seventh day God had finished the work He
had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work” (Genesis
2:2).
From Ex Machina (2015) teaser trailer, the tagline:
To erase the line between man and machine is to obscure the line between men
and gods.

A movie is to tell a story.
A good movie is to tell a story and to entertain its audience at the same
time.
A great movie is to tell a story and to touch the heart of its audience and
propagate/provoke thoughts.
Ex Machina (2015) is a great movie.

Disclaimer: mentioning God and Bible here does not indicate my belief in God
one way or the other; nor it validates the Bible in any way or shape.
Also notice that Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are two distinctive
fields or subjects, one in the field of Computer Science, and the other in
the branch of Engineering; although Ava is one perfect example of the two
combined, with an exquisitely beautiful female human form – a humanoid or
android.
And with all that, I would translate the movie title to Chinese as: 智能女神. |
