I am a student in the U.S. and will go to Montreal for a conference this Aug.,
I found the cheapest hotel for me is 'Days Hotel Montreal South Shore', and
the conference location is 'Palaise Des Congres De Montreal'.
Is it far between this two hotels? And if I also want to see some places, is a
rental car relatively cheaper than subway or buses?

one-day or three-day tourist pass is sold in every metro station. http://stm.info/English/info/a-cartet.htm
this website also has transit maps. print it out or take a free copy when you
get here.
seems most of the conferences are at the Palaise. Take the metro to the PLACE-
D'ARMES station. though there is no metro in south shore, but pass can be used
also on autobus. check out the link above for routes. or if you have
