Criminally,DA will handle it, but you won't get compensation from criminal
court and you don't have to find a lawyer because you are NOT a party to a
criminal case. Bear this in mind that as you are not a party in a criminal
case, you can't dominate the course of the case, the trial, etc., ie. if DA
wants to settle with the defendant and seek a minor infraction and little
jail time, there is very little you can do.
Civilly, it depends on how much assets that defendant has, including
personal property, insurance, etc. As there are other victims in this case
and your victim is 56 years old, I am not 100% expecting a huge compensation
at this stage, as there seems not be dependents and the defendant is only
23 years old, highly unlikely having any tangible, substantial assets by
himself.
