While birth rates fell across the nation, Virtua Health — a South Jersey
health system — saw a stunning baby boom in 2021.
Normally, hospitals might see a rise of 1% or 2% in birth rates during a
given year. But in 2021, Virtua Health — which operates three hospitals —
witnessed a 7% jump over the previous year, welcoming 9,109 babies at its
maternity wards.

“In my time here — I’ve been in my leadership role six years — and I’ve
never seen a swing of 7%,” said Dr. Nicole Lamborne, vice president of
clinical operations for women’s services at Virtua Health and a practicing
obstetrician-gynecologist.
Nationwide, there were 60,000 fewer births in 2021, according to research
conducted by the Brookings Institution.
“Recessions and public health crises have historically been associated with
reductions in births,” the Washington D.C.-based think tank said in its
study, adding that the pandemic “had both elements, thus had the potential
to lead to a sizable baby bust.”
But not for Virtua Health, which operates Virtua Voorhees, Virtua Mount
Holly and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden, as well as its new Midwifery
Birth & Wellness Center.
The health system also helped deliver 79 Afghan babies in 2021 after their
mothers were relocated in late August to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst or
surrounding regions following the American evacuation.
While it was a difficult transition at first, Lamborne said the health
system became something of a model for medically fragile and pregnant
patients.
“We averaged about 25 deliveries a month for this patient population, and
that’s continuing into January (2022),” she said. The health system has
now delivered 111 Afghan babies in all, she noted.
But the reason for the stark increase still isn’t fully understood,
Lamborne said.
“We’re still really trying to dig in and understand the extent to which we
saw the increase,” she said. “I’ve been talking to my colleagues across
the state to see how much of an impact it was across the state, and most of
those are still tallying their numbers.”
Other New Jersey health systems saw modest increases, but nothing like
Virtua’s baby boom. RWJBarnabas, for example, saw a 2.7% rise last year
with 2,451 babies born.
Atlantic Health, however, experienced its own significant increase — a
roughly 5.5% rise with 8,730 babies born in 2021 at its facilities. And
those numbers could increase as the health system continues to compile data,
an Atlantic spokeswoman said.
Lamborne has a few theories that might explain the rise.
First, she noted that her health system is located just outside Philadelphia
, which “is a high influx area of young families.”
But “COVID seemed to have some impact,” Lamborne said.
Nationally, many families opted to delay having a child in 2020, which may
have made that year’s numbers artificially lower, she said. That potential
phenomenon, combined with the typical growth a health system would normally
see, may have caused the 2021 surge.
Smaller practices also have merged with larger practices, “which is going
to lead to more procedures, more deliveries and all of that as a result,”
Lamborne said.
In addition, Virtua has expanded some of its programs, which has led to a “
new growth of patients,” she said, citing an increased number of patients
from Philadelphia.
“And then the efforts around our midwifery practice and the birth center
attracted a new set of patients that we had not traditionally cared for in
our health system,” she explained.
Virtua’s maternity wards remain busy, and Lamborne said she is interested
to see how 2022 shakes out.
