The gold medalist gets the highest spot on the podium. The flag of the
country that the gold medalist represents is raised higher than the others.
They play the anthem of the gold medalist, not the others.

Ok Dan back the truck up. Total medal count is accurate. Total gold count is
accurate. We are all able to read the medal chart. We can see that China is
leading in gold and we can see that the USA is leading in total medals. The
chart isn't making any assumptions.
“ China relies on a system that puts tens of thousands of children in
government-run training schools. Many of the young athletes are funneled
into less prominent sports that Beijing hopes to dominate. Rooted in the
Soviet model, the Chinese system relies on the state to scout tens of
thousands of children for full-time training at more than 2,000 government-
run sports schools. To maximize its golden harvest, Beijing has focused on
less prominent sports that are underfunded in the West or sports that offer
multiple Olympic gold medals.
It’s no coincidence that nearly 75 percent of the Olympic golds China has
won since 1984 are in just six sports: table tennis, shooting, diving,
badminton, gymnastics and weight lifting. More than two-thirds of China’s
golds have come courtesy of female champions, and nearly 70 percent of its
Tokyo delegation are women.”
What difference does it make? If I care only about gold medals, I am
certainly capable of looking at the gold medal column and figuring it out.
If I care about all medals, that information is there too. People can count
and assign country positions any way they want. Two weeks from now, nobody
will remember or care.
If you really want to celebrate how a country is doing in medal counts then
look at the percentage of athletes winning gold. China has 32 of 431
athletes (7%) winning gold. The US has 25 of 613 winning gold (4%). The
clear winner in the medal count is Bermuda with 50% of their athletes
winning gold.

ANY “medal count” is farcical, simply because it considers all medals to
be equal, which is ridiculous. There’s no way that a medal in a sport like
basketball, where an entire team can only possibly win a single medal every
Olympics, to count the same as a medal in a sport like track and field,
where every unique discipline has its own set of medals. It’s the same as
claiming that Michael Phelps is the “greatest Olympian” ever, solely
because he has the most medals. If he competed in a sport like, say, boxing,
he could still have been just as dominant, but would have only been able to
win at most one medal every Olympics. Instead, he racked up dozens of
medals, only possible because he completed in a sport which seemingly hands
out a medal with every pool towel.
instead of worrying about medal counts, ANY medal counts, let’s stick to
celebrating the accomplishments of the athletes, regardless of how many
medals they won, or any country won.
China also has like a billion people, so... the ratio of gold medal winners
to nation population could also be a way to rank countries, which would then
put Bermuda atop the gold medal count ratio (1:63,918)--with USA not even
close (1:13 million) and China down at the bottom (1:43 million). Just an
idea.

关键是中国的奖牌都不民主,美国和西方的奖牌share共同价值观,民主成分更高
