shop for some fruits and vegetables in a local store called Oakmont Market,
located on 19944 Homestead Rd Cupertino. I told my husband that I would go
in by myself, and he could wait for me in the car, as we are trying to
reduce the amount of of interaction with the public. I saw some people there
wearing a mask but I was not, as recommended by public health guidelines,
as I have not been ill or symptomatic. I tried my best to keep the
recommended 6 feet between me and others while shopping at the small market.
At the end, I waited in line at the registers and other people waiting in
line in front of me were also being careful to keep 6 feet apart as well.
Another cashier just opened her register and she called me over, so I went
to her register. A couple followed behind me and no one after them. While I
was putting my purchase on the belt, they did it at the same time too. I
felt like one of the customer was so close to me, practically hugging me
from behind, so I politely turned to them and asked them"if you don't mind,
could we please keep social distance?" I thought it would be a benefit to
everyone in the current circumstances. The customers were not offended.,
they back-up a little, but the cashier said, "You are so funny, you came
from China and you are the one brought the virus here". I asked her "excuse
me, what did you say?" She said “nothing”, so I asked again, but she just
yelled at me to insert my credit card into the machine more than 3 times. I
asked her where the manager of the store was, and she said he wasn't there.
I paid and got ready to leave. The store is very tiny (it's only about less
than 10 feet from the cashier's register to the exit door). I was almost at
the exit door, and the cashier yelled again, "She is a Chinese and dares to
ask people to stay away from her, she bring the virus here." I turned my
head to her and asked "what did you just say?", and this time she repeated
it again and again right to my face yelling about how I "brought the virus
here". Then she started to shout "get out of the store" at me, along with
two other store workers who had been standing by the exit door. Some of the
other customers in the store also joined in and began shouting at me to get
out of the store. There was another cashier who was a young man, who shouted
for everyone to be calm
This is very painful. This kind of behavior is hurtful and jarring. I'm
saddened that members of our community would turn on each other rather than
support each other in these times of crisis. I wrote this piece in the hopes
of garnering empathy for our fellow community members in these difficult
times. I hope that my story helps to bring us together, and that our
community can rise above ignorance and face this. |
