Dear XXX,
I am writing to you because I understand that you are a GOP member and I am
deeply concerned about some GOP members’ comments on attributing COVID-19
to Chinese culture. For example: Senator Cornyn’s recent comments on
Chinese culture “where people eat bats and snakes and dogs” and his
opinion that it is the cause of Covid-19.
1. A wide variety of viruses did not originate from China. There is no
relation between viruses and Chinese culture.
a. H1N1 originated from the U.S. infecting 60million people and causing
18449 deaths. By the way, no one called it “American virus”.
b. Mers originated from Middle East
c. AIDS originated from Africa and spread from the U.S.
d. Spanish Flu’s first outbreak was in the U.S.
e. Ebola from Africa
Another ancient example: Black Death plague originated in Europe but had
nothing to do with eating habits.
2. A lot of Americans, especially Texans, like to hunt and enjoy eating wild
animals. There is no concrete link between eating wild animals and
spreading diseases. According to scientific research: SARS did NOT come from
wild animals but originated from farmed animals infected by wild bats.
3. The comments expressed horrible stereotyping against Chinese culture. A
lot of Chinese don’t eat wild animals. I had NEVER heard any Chinese ate
bats. I grew up in China. My family always educated me not to eat wild
animals. 这里改成自己的经历。
4. The comments shifted people’s attention from fighting the virus to
racial hatred. Instead of focusing on fixing the loopholes caused by cutting
CDC findings and lack of awareness and supports, the administration and
some GOP members are increasingly playing the blaming games, intending to
shifting off the responsibilities to the country’s most vulnerable
ethnicity group. This is unethical, immoral and unacceptable. In the long
run, it is also harmful to the benefits of the U.S. in multiple ways.
5. A lot of Asian Americans contributed to fighting Covid 19. In fact, they
are doing more work than most other ethnic groups. They helped contain the
virus in Wuhan by donating protective gears. And now as the virus is
spreading in the U.S., multiple groups of American Chinese are donating
protective gears to American hospitals to protect American nurses and
physicians, by buying qualified medical necessities from China, as we speak.
I can’t imagine how these people feel when a politician is blaming the
virus on their culture!
We believe that the U.S. is a great country. We appreciate that the U.S.
gave us Chinese Americans opportunities to thrive and realize our dreams on
this amazing land. We want to reciprocate by contributing to the country. We
believe that the administration and GOP have the ability NOT to inflame
racial hatred or stigmatize Asian culture. That's why I am writing this
message. Thank you very much for your time. We would greatly appreciate it
if these concerns could be addressed.
Sincerely,
