ISLAND OF HAWAI‘I, Hawaii — The use of sophisticated DNA sequencing by a
team of scientists has determined that Hawaii's state land mammal, the
Hawaiian hoary bat, migrated to the islands from the Pacific coast of North
America in two separate waves more than 9,000 years apart.

The Hawaiian hoary bat or ʻōpeʻapeʻa (Aeorestes semotus)[2]
is an endangered species, related to the mainland American hoary bat (family
Vespertilionidae), that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian
hoary bat is one of two species of mammal that are endemic to the islands,
the other being the Hawaiian monk seal.[3] It is a federally listed
endangered taxon of the United States. |
