A Chinese Twitter user named Eddie Xie @eddiex used to work as a programmer,
“[using] data mining techniques to solve real life problems, at Twitter.”
Now he lives in China, running his own business. On the morning of February
22, he sent out a series of tweets alerting his Twitter followers that he
is being summoned by Chinese national security agents (his “NSA” refers to
the Chinese Ministry of State Security). We find the incident noteworthy
and would like to share it with our readers by compiling his tweets. For the
few tweets that were posted in Chinese, we provide translation. — The

so strangely, i was asked by a NSA agent to report to them immediately
because I studied and worked in the US before. i did nothing wrong but the
NSA is forcing me (bypassing court) to meet them now. have no idea if i can
still come out. if i dont tweet again tmw, im probably

anything that harm national interest… of course i didnt do shit. and they
would like my “help” if needed. I have 0 interest
i said im just a programmer and i know nothing else. but they seem to
believe if you work at Twitter, you can insert a snippet of code and turn
the service or something… i told them, 1) i have no interest doing anything
like that 2) there’s a thing called code review

Scared, I broke into a cold sweat. I said I can do what the law requires me
to do, and I would not cooperate with them on anything on the basis of “
needs of national interest” not stipulated in writing, or that I would
first consult with my lawyer. I’m not sure if I said the right thing. (吓

They are not checking whether I was using a VPN. They are looking into me
because I declined three of their requests for meetings since I came back
last year. This time they ordered me to come to see them directly. They are
local agents of state security. So they have been monitoring my whereabouts
all the time. Seems they have to hit their KPIs at the end of the year? (他
