National Journalism Award for story which explores Asian American Poverty in
New York

Kudos to Fox 5 News NY (WNYW-TV) reporter Ti-Hua Chang who will receive an
AAJA National Journalism Award in the category of Television-AAPI Issues for
his ground breaking story on Asian American Poverty, based on a New York
City study by the Asian American Federation of New York (AAFNY). Click here

The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) will present its awards
for excellence in news coverage of Unlimited Subject Matter and Asian
American and Pacific Islander Issues for 2010 on Saturday, August 7 at its
Gala Scholarship and Awards Banquet at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa
at AAJA’s National Convention. Frank Buckley, anchor, KTLA and Betty
Nguyen, CBS News correspondent will co-emcee the banquet. Laura Ling,
journalist, producer and on-air correspondent, author and correspondent will
be the keynote speaker.
Ti-Hua Chang joined WNYW/Fox 5 in 2009 as a general assignment reporter from
sister station WWOR/My9, where he served as a general assignment and
investigative reporter since 2008. Previously, Chang worked at WCBS-TV where
he served in the same capacity. Prior to that, he was a reporter with WNBC.
On 9/11, he was the first reporter to inform the public on the number of
causalities that day quoting Mayor Giuliani and city officials. Chang joined
WNBC from WNYC-TV, where he was host of his own talk show, New York Hotline
. Before he began his on-air career, he was an investigative producer at ABC
News.
Chang is the recipient of numerous awards. In 1996, he won the prestigious
Peabody Award for a series of reports he filed on accused drug-dealing
murderers. In 2004, he won a New York Press Club award for his reports on a
shooting at City Hall. He received an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2005 for a
piece exposing police officers using a helicopter and high tech infra-red
equipment to spy on private citizens. Chang is especially proud of
discovering the four witnesses to the 1963 murder of Medgar Evers, which led
to the reopening of that famous case.
Chang has also won five Emmys; the Philadelphia, Denver and Detroit Press
Association awards; and, the Associated Press and United Press International
awards. Very active in Asian-American community affairs, Chang was both a
national and local New York Board member of the Asian-American Journalists
Association. Chang also has been published in a number of magazines,
including the Sunday New York Times and The Detroit News.
Chang was a recipient of the 2006 AAJA Dr Suzanne Ahn Award for Civil Rights
& Social Justice for Asian Americans, and is a graduate of the AAJA 2005
Executive Leadership Program.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University’s
Graduate School of Journalism, Chang was named by Columbia in 2004 as one of
10 most influential Columbia alumni in New York City, where he resides with
his family.

Ted Chen
Ted Chen serves as a general assignment reporter for NBC4 Southern
California. Joining the station in 1995, Chen can be seen weekly on the NBC4
News at 11 a.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. His most recent news stories can

Chen has reported on many major news stories. He covered the 2008 Summer
Olympics in Beijing China, reporting live on the gold-medal winning
accomplishments of Team USA, as well as the impact of economic
transformation in a country of more than one billion people.
Chen has a passion for politics and has reported on major political stories,
and, has covered elections for more than 20 years. In 2002, Chen traveled
with then Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn on his historic economic development
trip to Asia and filed live reports from Seoul, South Korea and Beijing,
China.
In 2004 and 2005, Chen covered the Scott Peterson Trial in Redwood City,
California.
A journalist known for his versatility, Chen also covers such Hollywood
events as the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.
Chen came to NBC4 from KGTV in San Diego, where he began in 1993 as a
general assignment reporter and substitute anchor for the weekday morning
and weekend newscasts. During his tenure at KGTV, he covered significant
events such as the assassination of Mexico’s presidential candidate Luis
Donaldo Colosio, the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the Malibu firestorms.
Prior to KGTV, Chen was a general assignment reporter and substitute weekend
anchor at KSEE-TV, the NBC affiliate in Fresno, California.
Before that, he served as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor
for KRNV-TV in Reno, Nevada. At KRNV-TV, Chen provided extensive coverage of
major stories including the Oakland firestorms.
In 2002, Chen was honored by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism’s
Workshop on Journalism, Race & Ethnicity for his series of news stories on
Asian Americans. The pieces covered Asian American political power, the role
of Chinese schools in shaping Chinese American children, and the forgotten
heroes of Chinese American World War II veterans.
He received a San Diego Press Club award in 1995 for his story on "Area 51,"
the top secret military base in Southern Nevada used for testing highly
sensitive military aircraft. UFO buffs believe the same area was used for
alien research covered up by the government.
For his coverage of a same-sex commitment ceremony in San Diego, he received
an award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
Chen is a member of the Board of Directors for the Chinese American Museum
in Los Angeles, as well as The Asian Youth Center in San Gabriel and
regularly serves as master of ceremonies for many community events in Los
Angeles and throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
He attended the University of California at Los Angeles, and graduated from
the University of California in San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
political science.

Gordon Tokumatsu
Gordon Tokumatsu is an Emmy award winning general assignment reporter for
NBC4 Southern California. Joining the station in 1993, his most recent news

Tokumatsu has covered several high profile news stories since joining NBC4,
including a piece about an LAPD officer who ticketed an elderly woman for
moving too slowly in a crosswalk. The story sparked National interest and
was picked up by a number of media outlets. Tokumatsu was the first to
reveal the identities of two men arrested in the deadly 1997 North Hollywood
bank robbery/shoot-out, and the first to report on the controversial
harvesting of corneas by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. Tokumatsu
also covered the tragic Oklahoma City bombing and the 1994 Northridge
earthquake.
Prior to joining NBC4, Tokumatsu served as a general assignment reporter for
KCRA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Sacramento.He also hosted and produced
Perceptions, a quarterly documentary-style Asian public affairs program. In
1992, he provided sole live coverage of Hurricane Iniki from Hawaii for all
satellite news networks. His reports were aired Worldwide via the NBC News
Channel and other outlets.
Before that, Tokumatsu was a general assignment reporter for KLAS-TV in Las
Vegas and started his TV career at KESQ-TV in Palm Springs, California. He
was bitten by the broadcasting bug while working as a newswriter at KNX News
Radio in Los Angeles.
A native of Hawaii, Tokumatsu is half "Nisei," or second generation
Japanese-American. He is also half English/Norwegian. He dedicates much of
his time to supporting Asian community events, and is a member of the Asian
American Journalists Association. He enjoys writing mystery fiction, camping
, working out and mountain biking. Tokumatsu lives in Los Angeles.
Sam Chu Lin
b. 1939, Greenville, MI
d. 2006, Burbank, CA
An American journalist. He was one of the first Asian-Americans to appear on
television. He gained a national audience broadcasting from New York for
CBS News. In his later years he was news reporter for California TV stations
. His last broadcasting job was for KTTV, a Fox affiliate. |
