nonaggression pact aimed at preventing clashes from erupting in the
disputed South China Sea may start this year if "outside parties" don't
cause a major disruption.
China, ASEAN agree on sea code draft framework
MANILA - China said Sunday it agreed with Southeast Asian nations on a draft
framework for a code of conduct in disputed waters, with formal
negotiations to begin this year, as it insisted that no "outside parties"
should be involved. The code of conduct will replace a 15-year-old non-
binding declaration between Beijing and the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations in the resource-rich waters, where China has built artificial
islands to reinforce its claims. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said a "
framework draft" was "agreed upon and approved" during meetings in Manila. |
