the brassiere, but it was not until the 1930s that the bra as we know it
today emerged.
This cotton-and-silk creation by John J Roussel was made in France. “The
technique created a softly rounded, natural profile,” says Edwina Ehrman.
“The materials and shape of the bra reflect the feminine silhouette and
lithe, body-conscious fashions of the 1930s.”
The design also reflected changing society, as women wanted lightweight,
practical but pretty underwear, that did not need the help of a maid to take
