一开始是在极端的情况下才这么做，但后来成为普遍做法。挪威的阿蒙森比英国的斯科
特早一个月到达南极极点，成为史上第一人，关键原因就是使用雪橇犬，而斯科特使用
了西伯利亚矮种马。
探险后半程，随着负重的减少，雪橇犬被逐渐杀死。雪橇犬的唯一食物是其他的雪橇犬
，而雪橇犬的肉也称为探险队员唯一的鲜肉来源。这不是不得已而为之，而是探险计划
的一部分。阿蒙森自己写道：
"...there is the obvious advantage that dog can be fed on dog. One can
reduce one's pack little by little, slaughtering the feebler ones and
feeding the chosen with them. In this way they get fresh meat. Our dogs
lived on dog's flesh and pemmican the whole way, and this enabled them to do
splendid work. And if we ourselves wanted a piece of fresh meat we could
cut off a delicate little fillet; it tasted to us as good as the best beef.
The dogs do not object at all; as long as they get their share they do not
mind what part of their comrade's carcass it comes from. All that was left
after one of these canine meals was the teeth of the victim – and if it had
been a really hard day, these also disappeared." | o***o
