Pennsylvania, announced Sunday he intends to marry a 40-year-old man.
In an article for the New York Times, Wofford said he will marry Matthew
Charlton on April 30. The union comes about 20 years after the death of
Wofford's wife, Clare, in 1996. The couple were married for 48 years.
In the Times article, Wofford said he met Charlton about 15 years ago and
their friendship gradually grew more intimate.
"To some, our bond is entirely natural, to others it comes as a strange
surprise, but most soon see the strength of our feelings and our devotion to
each other," Wofford writes.
"Too often, our society seeks to label people by pinning them on the wall —
straight, gay or in between. I don't categorize myself based on the gender
of those I love. I had a half-century of marriage with a wonderful woman,
and now am lucky for a second time to have found happiness."
Wofford said his children and Charlton's family have accepted the
relationship.
"At age 90, I am lucky to be in an era where the Supreme Court has
strengthened what President Obama calls 'the dignity of marriage' by
recognizing that matrimony is not based on anyone's sexual nature, choices
or dreams. It is based on love."
Wofford was appointed as senator in 1991 after the death of Republican Sen.
John Heinz, but was defeated in the 1994 election by Rick Santorum.
Wofford has a long history of advocating for civil rights. He participated
in the Selma march for voting rights in 1965 and helped organize the Peace
Corps with President John F. Kennedy. | t**x 发帖数: 20965 | | k*******g 发帖数: 7321 | | t*******y 发帖数: 21396 | 4 The union comes about 20 years after the death of Wofford's wife, Clare, in
