it’s true, they are. But those doing the shouting seem to think that China
has been keeping the yuan artificially low: it hasn’t, it’s been keeping
it high. If China stopped manipulating, most importantly by freeing up the
capital account so that Chinese citizens could freely send capital out of
the country, then there would be a significant devaluation of the yuan in
relation to the dollar. Absolutely not what those shouters about
manipulation either expect or want: for that would make Chinese exports to
the US even cheaper. This part of the story is a warning that sometimes you
might not want to get what you’ve been wishing for. |
