Personal true story from a Briton who travels to China on business. One
evening I was walking back to my hotel in Guangzhou and a man tapped me on
the shoulder. I just thought he was a beggar (and you do see a lot of them)
so I ignored him. He continued to tap on my shoulder so I spun round,
clearly irritated. He was holding my mobile phone and my PASSPORT which,
with almost staggering stupidity, I'd allowed to fall out of my laptop case.
He wanted no reward, he was just being a good citizen. I cannot think of
many western countries where this would happen.

Actually, Guangzhou is thought to be a dangerous city for a reputation of
high crime rate by Chinese.

Good for you. In my impression, Guangzhou was not as safe as other big
cities like Beijing and Shanghai. But situation might improve now.

To be honest, that's our most dangerous city already.
I have been traveling to China for the past 21 years, every year, sometimes
twice a year. I have traveled extensively throughout China, from Xi'an to
Hainan, and many places in between. I have traveled on 'hard sleeper' (long
distance),
and 'soft sleeper', hydrofoils, ordinary buses, subways and on the Maglev (
300mph train), and regional Chinese airlines.
I have had a front row seat watching China grow. I went to the 2008
Beijing Olympics and the World Expo in 2010.
I grew up in NYC and can attest that Shanghai subways are much preferable
to those in NYC, by far.
The hostility that some foreigners seem to buy into about China being
unsafe or dangerous is for the most part ignorance and propaganda.
I feel safer in alone on the streets of Shanghai than I do in New York.
The reality: China and the US are about the same size. China has 1.353
billion people, the US 315 million. Now picture the place you live in with
at least four times as many people living in it! I wonder how good a job the
US Government would do facing this same reality?
Absolutely.
Look, I'm Japanese, and Japanese media often shows angry Chinese anti-Japan
protesters burning Japanese flags or attacking Japanese restaurants. As a
result, some Japanese people are worried about going to China, but that's
ridiculous. The protesters are a infinitesimally small percentage of people,
considering the whole Chinese population.
The image of China who we often see through the media is heavily distorted.
As somebody who's been to 30 countries, I can say that China is not even
remotely dangerous. You just have to watch out for scammers in big, touristy
cities, but they are easy to avoid.
Go and visit China, it will be an interesting experience. | c***c
