Hong Kong media baron denies CIA connection

Jimmy Lai, the anti-Beijing media tycoon whose home was searched as part of
a bribery
inquiry, has denied involvement in any “scandal” or having connections to
the US Central
Intelligence Agency.
Hong Kong graft busters raided the media magnate’s house on Thursday as
part of an
investigation into whether politicians who received donations from Mr Lai
had violated bribery
laws. Writing in Apple Daily, the main newspaper in his empire, Mr Lai said
the “scandal”
reaffirmed his moral character.
Mr Lai, a colourful self-made billionaire, is one of the most vocal critics
in Hong Kong of the Chinese
government. He recently came under the spotlight after leaked emails showed
he had given money to anti-Beijing lawmakers in Hong
Kong and to help pro-democracy group Occupy Central.
The bribery investigation comes as China prepares to release on Sunday a
plan for political reform in Hong Kong. China has agreed to
introduce “universal suffrage” – one person, one vote – for the 2017
election of Hong Kong chief executive. The issue has sparked fierce
debate in the former British colony amid signs that Beijing will ensure the
ability to vet potential candidates.
Martin Lee, founder of the Democratic party, said there were signs of “
white terror” in Hong Kong, in a reference to a violent campaign
of suppression that occurred during the Chinese civil war. He said the
public perception of the Independent Commission Against
Corruption, the anti-graft agency whose officers searched Mr Lai’s home,
was that it was more lenient when it came to pro-Beijing
figures.
“People are afraid. The ICAC is not perceived to be fair. The public
perception is that when you are pro-Beijing they won’t investigate
you,” said Mr Lee. “The timing of the search was intended to pass a
message to the people of Hong Kong.”
The ICAC rejected the claims, saying that politics were “totally irrelevant
”. It said the raid was “launched shortly after the search
warrants were obtained from the High Court in accordance with the usual
practice”.
In his Apple Daily column, Mr Lai lashed out at claims that his political
activities and the anti-Beijing stance of his media properties
were connected with the CIA.
“I’ve earned every penny I own through legal businesses,” wrote Mr Lai.
“If anyone disagrees, they should provide evidence . . . shame
on you.”
The claims are driven by the fact that Mark Simon, Mr Lai’s right-hand man,
is the son of a veteran CIA officer and has worked for US
naval intelligence. The South China Morning Post recently quoted Mr Simon as
saying he had interned at the CIA, but Mr Simon told
the Financial Times that this was incorrect.
“I don’t work for the CIA,” said Mr Simon.
China is expected to announce the framework for universal suffrage in Hong
Kong on Sunday. Local media
have reported that candidates for chief executive must secure the support of
more than half the 1,200
members of a nominating committee. It is also proposing to cap the number of
candidates at two or three.
At present the chief executive is elected by a 1,200-strong committee of
mostly pro-Beijing elites. But the
current system only requires potential candidates to secure the support of
one-eighth of the members, which
has allowed anti-Beijing Democrats twice to appear on the ballot.
Mr Lee said requiring the support of half the committee was a “retrograde
step” because Democrats would
no longer have a chance of becoming candidates. “More than half is
ridiculous because they [Beijing] control three-quarters.”
Speaking in Hong Kong this week, Wang Zhenmin, dean of Tsinghua University
law school who is advising the central government,
defended the plan, saying that “less perfect universal suffrage is better
than no universal suffrage”.
He added that it was important to protect the interests of the business
community in Hong Kong.

记者，曾经采访过他。黎智英与李韵琴都是天主教徒，黎智英经李柱铭推荐由主教陈日
