China has seemed to be integrating with the world's democracies, and
business ties made trusting China's intentions easy, but now China's rulers
have changed their direction, away from integration and toward seeking
dominance of their neighbors.
Most people have not understood the implications of China's grasping at the
South China Sea, so they expect China to continue to be a friend, but its
motives in the South China Sea cannot be friendly, because it has absolutely
no good reason to claim all that sea for itself, not for resources, and not
for defense.
China never was the sovereign of the South China Sea; its maps are inane.
From the South China Sea China can be the aggressor against its weaker
neighbors, who none of them have even the slightest capability of assailing
China.
China is not vulnerable to its South, so it need not amass the vast array of
weapons it has installed along its South China Sea coastline. Its South is
mountainous, which is good for defense and bad for offense, its South has
less industry and less transport routes than its East; there is less to
defend in China's South.
For those who have been paying close attention it is transparently self
evident China has changed its course away from maintaining friendly
relations, toward resisting integration with the world's democracies, in
order to preserve Communism.
Communism in China must certainly die off, as long as China's business
practices are determined by market forces. By taking the South China Sea -
through which about 1/5th of ocean borne commerce travels - China's rulers
would be able to dictate terms to the world, and thus do business in ways
that would preserve Communism, by influencing other nations' trade practices
and their foreign policy.
China's intentions still seem to many to be friendly, but I have been paying
close attention, and China seems to me to be pulling a bait-and-switch:
Sell itself as our friend, then when we complain tell us complaining is not
allowed, which is what it does to the Chinese people. |
