s Antarctic expedition and doing scientific research when sea ice closed in
on Christmas Eve.
The ship has 74 people onboard, including scientists, crew members and
paying passengers.
The first of three icebreakers sent to the area, about 1,500 nautical miles
south of Hobart, was within sight last night.
But after coming within six-and-a-half nautical miles of the expedition boat
, the Chinese icebreaker had to stop.
Andrea Hayward-Maher from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
says the ice was too thick.
"It has encountered heavy ice and it's not safe for them to continue to the
Russian vessel for their own safety," she said.
"The master of the vessel needs to consider the safety of his crew and his
vessel as well. We'll be looking at other options today."
It is unlikely a French icebreaker about 12 nautical miles away will get
through the ice, and Australia's Antarctic resupply ship the Aurora
Australis is not expected to arrive until tomorrow.
Ms Hayward-Maher says the Chinese ship has a helicopter on board and has
been asked to remain in the area.
Chris Turney is leading the team of scientists, meteorologists, marine
ecologists, oceanographers, ice-core and tree-ring specialists.
The team is hoping to update precious scientific records made by Mawson and
his team 100 years ago.
"We'll return north - we've got sampling to do, continuous measurements as
we go through the seawater - and then we'll pop into Macquarie Island,"
Professor Turney said.
"We hope to get some work done there and then push on to the port of
Invercargill in southern New Zealand, aiming to be back home about the 4th
or 5th of January."
Professor Turney says the hundreds of thousands of measurements made by
Mawson have become critical to charting signs of global warming. | s***c 发帖数: 1926 | 2 呼唤dsb来解释一下海事救援法则。
是不是俄罗斯船呼救以后,附近的雪龙号就要服从澳大利亚有关机构的指挥,哪怕耽误
