As an asian american (2nd generation), this article totally makes sense.
Asian countries have always excelled in international education ratings (
orly?!). BUT, as this article states, education does not equate to
innovation. The thing that makes America at the forefront of innovation is
much.. much less complicated then what this article makes it out to be.
It's because American culture values the potential of dreams. I know that
sounds super campy, but it's true. Yes, we have more "stupid" kids then most
other developed countries, but we also let our kids dream big. And for
every XX amount of kids that slack and are lackluster, there's that 1 kid
that was encouraged by their parents to pursue something outside of liberal
arts, and do something crazy. Mix that in with some intelligence, and the
right opportunities, it's the perfect storm for innovation.
Asian culture does not really give any leeway for dreaming. The culture is "
get straight A's, become successful". And success is always determined by
how much money you make. In contrast, American culture see's success more of
a factor of impact, rather then money.
Education is knowledge, but knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom comes from life,
not schools. And in America, people are more free to simply "live". | d********t 发帖数: 837 | 5 这个是烙印,不奇怪。Dream big is their specialty.

To some extent I agree with him. Education is not wisdom.
However, wisdom is not innovation either. What is more, education and wisdom
are not mutually excluded. Can you imagine a person with a lot of wisdom
can't even get the simplest calculation straight? On the other hand,
without enough education, how innovative can a person be? How can you create
a useful device without the basic math and physics or chemistry skill? You
might have wisdom for a big idea, but how can you materialize it? Any
innovation without the need of such skills, which could only be acquired by
education, is hardly innovative.
America performs poorly in basic education, but this does not mean that it
fails to produce enough people with excellent education for the purpose of
innovation. America is super in innovation, yet it does not necessarily
follow that it is the result of lousy education. Some extremely smart
innovators with excellent education can contribute to all novelty, yet the
wise with no education contribute nothing.
This Indian guy is just fooling himself by playing word games.
American kids have dreams, so American are more innovative? Money is not
important? Does he have any common sense of innovation? Money is not
important because you have already had enough. You can afford losing in the
innovative adventure. Even so, why most talent kids in USA choose Medical/
Law/Business schools?
Regarding the innovative perspective of Chinese, I would say that Chinese
kids also have dreams. But they are constantly under much greater life
pressure. They are more vulnerable and tend to take the safer approach. It
does not mean that they are less innovative.
In the ancient time, Chinese are not very innovative due to the isolation
arising from geographic barrier. Nowadays, such barrier no longer exists, and
great Chinese innovators will eventually emerge as the life pressure eases.
