Great article. The US has indeed dithered too long and suspiciously and
biasedly on the Diaoyu – which China has picked up – and should have read
the riot act to Abe and Japan ages ago. The problem is that I highly suspect
that a former defense official Kurt Campbell – together with Hillary
Clinton – thought that they could use the Diayou to re-arm Japan to counter
China militarily – rather than engage China commercially and socially.
This huge mis-judgement – has led to the current impasse – as China
suspects that US of two facedness – and will not tolerate it anymore. Kerry
has made a great start correcting all Hillary’s US foreign policy errors
and has begun to make peace around the world. Kerry and Obama now need to
get a grip on the Diaoyu situation and get Japan to back down and negotiate
with China over the Diaoyu – so it does not become a serious crisis. The US
’s economic relationship with China and teh region is too important to be
jeopardised over some stolen rocks. The Diayou are historically Chinese and
they should have been returned to China under the WW2 Potsdam Declaration
and so they have no place being covered by the Japan/US defense Treaty –
unless the US is in the business of stealing other people’s property!!! |
