A White House petition reached 100,000 signatures before its 30-day deadline
on Wednesday, the first to reach the threshold requiring a White House
response in months.
Was it about Obamacare, NSA surveillance, Benghazi, the budget or any of the
other news stories dominating the day? No, it was about Jimmy Kimmel.
The petition, started in late October, criticizes a sketch on Kimmel’s ABC
show that featured children answering his questions on topics including the
national debt. One child responded to a question about how the U.S. should
pay back all the debt it owes China by suggesting Americans kill everyone in
China.
“The kids might not know anything better. However, Jimmy Kimmel and ABC’s
management are adults. They had a choice not to air this racist program,
which promotes racial hatred. The program is totally unacceptable and it
must be cut. A sincere apology must be issued. It is extremely distasteful
and this is the same rhetoric used in Nazi Germany against Jewish people,”
the petition reads.
Amid mounting criticism, Kimmel and ABC have apologized for the sketch.
The petition needed 100,000 signatures by Nov. 18 to merit a response,
according to White House petition guidelines, and it did so with 12 days to
spare. As of Thursday morning, the petition had more than 101,000 signatures.
The White House raised the threshold to 100,000 from 25,000 in January after
petitions, including building a Death Star and deporting Piers Morgan,
reached the required number of responses.
As for the Kimmel petition, a White House spokesman said if and when the
administration decides to respond, it will be posted online like other
responses.
The issue has attracted overseas attention. The petition was mentioned in
the South China Morning Post in October. While signatures to petitions often
include location, many of the Kimmel signatures don’t.
