Wang Lijun, the former police chief of Chongqing and right-hand man of the
city's deposed party secretary Bo Xilai, will go on trial for treason next
week in Chengdu, reports the Hong Kong-based English-language South China
Morning Post.
Though the crime may be subject to the death penalty, it is expected that
Wang will be given a lenient sentence as he turned witness for the
prosecution in the investigation into Bo's "serious discipline violations"
and the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood by Bo's wife Gu Kailai,
whose case was heard on Thursday at a court in Hefei, Anhui province. An
insider familiar with the matter in Chengdu told the newspaper that Wang's "
merits" during the investigation will be taken into account in sentencing.
Two insiders cited by the newspaper said Wang's trial will open next week in
Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan in southwest China. For Wang, it
will be a return to where the whole scandal started — it is the site of
the US consulate to which he fled in February fearing for his life after
confronting his former boss with his suspicions regarding Heywood's death.
A source closed to the Chongqing municipal government also confirmed that
the trial will open in Chengdu in a few days' time.
The case of Bo Xilai, who was stripped of all party titles and has been
detained since April due to his unspecified violations, will be concluded
before the Communist Party's 18th National Congress later this fall,
according to the newspaper.
Meanwhile, four former subordinates of Wang Lijun are set to stand trial on
Friday, charged by prosecutors in Hefei with helping Gu cover up the murder
of Heywood during the investigation,
The four senior officers are Guo Weiguo, former deputy chief of Chongqing's
Public Security Bureau, Li Yang, former chief of the bureau's criminal
section, Wang Pengfei, former chief of the bureau's technical detection team
, and Wang Zhi, former executive deputy chief of the Public Security Sub-
bureau of the municipality's Shapingba district.
Family members of the four defendants flew to Hefei three days ago and have
asked for seats at the trial. The court has only permitted two relatives of
each to attend, asking them not to reveal any details about the trial or to
accept interviews from media outlets.
Their lawyers have also been ordered to ensure their statements are in line
with the central government's political concerns during the trial, according
