the Ministry of Gas Industry of the Soviet Union transformed itself into a
corporation, keeping all its assets intact. The company was later privatized
in part, but currently the Russian government holds a controlling stake)
Check out the map in section 5 Transmission, and you will realize that
Gazprom's natural gas pipelines are all in European part of Russia.

On Mar 1, 2011 Gazprom paid $773 million to a reluctant TNK-BP for Kovytka
natural gas field.
You can see from the map that currently there is no natural gas pipeline to-
-or close to--China.
