l****u 发帖数: 3130 | 1 As a UCSD student with friends in the Kubiak lab, I feel compelled to supply
some background, for those who are interested.
First, the Kubiak lab is about as ethnically diverse as could be imagined.
There are currently students working in the lab who have Filipino, Japanese,
African, Vietnamese, Indian, South American, and African heritage, among
others.
Some are American, many are foreign. A large fraction of the lab members
are women.
It's actually rare to find a lab this diverse, anywhere. They are an
extremely friendly group, working on the difficult and important problem of
developing next generation energy solutions. The idea that there is
hostility or racism in the lab is simply absurd to anyone who is familiar
with the environment.
Similarly, the idea that Professor Kubiak was behind the posting, rather
than a graduate student (or students) with an off-sense of humor, should
strike anyone who's spent time on a college campus in a research environment
as ridiculous. Professors don't write this sort of thing - students do.
I would suggest that the completely disproportionate amount attention
showered on this event by the UCSD administration and the media among others
, is not only counter production, but is in itself an act of hostility which
far rivals the poor judgment of a twenty-something year old student (or
students), who have most certainly already learned a hard lesson in
appropriate website content.
Calling someone a "racist" is a very serious change, and it carries a lot of
weight. Perhaps this level of vitriol should be reserved for someone who
actually is a racist, rather than someone who cultivates a broadly diverse
and collaborative lab environment?
Also, one final comment - Dr. Kubiak's duties are to insure that his
students are immersed in a productive and safe learning environment, where
they can advance our knowledge of science (and actually, solve an important
real world problem), and he does this admirably. His job is not to be a
Kindergarten teacher, and watch over every word that his students, who are
very bright, but also young and may occasionally be inappropriate, may say.
The website has been taken down, Professor Kubiak has done the honorable
thing and apologized to those who were offended (even though, as I mentioned
, he clearly didn't write the website post), and I hope those who were
unwittingly led to believe that he is racist will come to realize the
mistake, and the lab will quickly be able to get back to doing the important
work that they have been doing.
