Subject Outraged by racial slur used on UCSD web page
Mailed-by gmail.com
Dr. Kubiak, Chancellor Fox, President Yudof, Governor Brown, Honorary UC
Regents:
I'm outraged to learn that the homepage of Dr. Kubiak's own research lab
has been hosting very offensive racial slurs prominently on its main
page for the past few years. As Pat Flynn from San Diego Union Tribune
reported [1] the slur "the Chinaman" was posted explicitly on the main
page of Dr. Kubiak's lab's website.
There's no context that warrants the usage of such painful racial slur
toward Chinese and Asian Americans. The harm of this word "C******n" to
Chinese and Asian Americans is more severe than the "N****r" to African
Americans or "F****t" to LGBT Americans. Mere mentioning of that word
brings back painful memories of Chinese and Asian Americans being
mistreated and discriminated against in California and elsewhere in
America. The days of Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese internment
were shameful past that none of us would like to see happening again to
anyone.
Dr. Kubiak, you should have better standard and taste for the choice of
words on your website. As an academic, you should realize this word is
never appropriate no matter the context. Even more, by closely looking
at the Google Cache of your website dated Apr 21, 2011 22:49:05 [2], I'm
puzzled to see any justification at all the reason you put this word up
on your website. This leads to the logical hypothesis that you may have
personal prejudice toward Chinese and Asian Americans. It's no doubt
your first Amendment right to exercise free speech, however, I can
safely assume we all agree the website of a renowned public university
like UCSD is not the proper forum for you to preach the hate speech and
prejudice.
I'm shocked to learn that in this day and age, where we have made such a
great progress toward acceptance, tolerance and diversity, this kind of
slur can still be posted on an academic website for more than a year. I
was so proud of our state in its stance on diversity and equality that
we are the only state in the nation with an openly gay Assembly Speaker,
Honorary UC Regent Mr. Perez. This makes me even more shocked that this
can happen in a public-funded university in our great state of
California.
Sincerely,
blulemood, Ph.D.
