What's amazing to me is that the Japanese devotion to saving face trumps all
, even in such a dire situation. That's why they're "frozen in place,"
unwilling to accept help, unwilling to tell the truth about what's happening
, unwilling to face the facts of this catastrophe. Saving face comes first,
even before the lives of their own fellow citizens. In these circumstances,
saving face amounts to false pride.
The shame at the losses that will follow this false pride will cause them to
lose more face than if they had just admitted they need help in the first
place.
And when the final analysis on the cause of this disaster is presented, it
will include that to save face the Japanese bureaucracy rejected the
warnings 40 years ago about the deficiencies of their containment vessels. |
