Nguyen Van Tho, the Vietnamese ambassador to China, told Chinese reporters
on Thursday that China and Vietnam would hold a new round of talks on their
territorial dispute in the South China Sea this year, Chinese news
organizations reported Friday. He declined to name a specific date, but said
, “I am optimistic about this issue,” the reports said.
Both countries and other Asian nations claim parts of the South China Sea,
which has potentially large oil and natural gas deposits. The territorial
dispute is one of the thorniest diplomatic issues between China and Vietnam.
They also take different approaches to trying to resolve the dispute:
Vietnam prefers multilateral negotiations, with all the countries at the
table, while China prefers bilateral talks. Last July, the United States
surprised China when it said it had “national interests” in the area and
wanted China to abide by a declaration of conduct that China had reached in
2002 with other Asian nations. | W*F
