large economy within the next 40 years surpassing China's gross domestic
product (GDP) growth rate by 2050, says a report published by consultant
firm PwC on Friday.
In its latest ‘The World in 2050’ series of reports, PwC relives the hare-
and-tortoise story and claims India's current 8.9 percent growth rate could
well surpass China's present 9.6 percent.
India's significantly younger and faster growing working population is one
of the reason the firm cites. Also since India's growth story starts from a
lower level of economic development, it has more catch-up potential than
China, the report says.
China itself is seen as overtaking the US as the world's biggest economy by
2020.
India too is poised to get close to outspacing America's gross domestic
product (GDP).
According to the report, India is expected to achieve the most significant
increase in share of global economic output from just 2 percent now to about
13 percent by 2050.
"The global financial crisis has further accelerated the shift in global
economic power to the emerging economies," the report says.
But the joy ride for India may only come true if it sticks to its growth-
friendly policies and maintains firm fiscal codes and continues investing
significantly in infrastructure. The report also pitches for pulling up
educational standards and rural development.
PwC India regional managing partner and leader – markets & industries,
Jairaj Purandare, said, "India, helped by its strong demographic dividend,
is poised to overtake the US to emerge as the second largest economy in
purchasing power parity terms by 2050."
PwC also foresees a shift in the growth engines for India with thinning
dependence on outsourcing and more on its exports, engineers and rising
