A 34-year-old man died Monday after stealing a police car, getting shot at by an officer, and then crashing the vehicle into a city bus in the downtown area, police said.
The Tucson Police Department shut down South Sixth Avenue from Congress Street to 14th Street for several hours at rush hour, with officers at every intersection turning away drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
The officer-involved shooting and crash ended a series of violent incidents involving the man that included at least two failed carjacking attempts and a fight with a police officer.
The string of incidents started around 3:50 p.m. downtown when the man tried to take a car with several people in it near the Ronstadt Transit Center, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a police spokeswoman.
An off-duty police officer working at the center called police, Lopez said.
Something went wrong in the carjacking attempt; the man fired a gun; and then he ran south on Sixth, she said.
The man then tried to carjack another vehicle in a nearby parking lot. He failed and kept running south, she said.
He ran into police on Broadway, where one officer got out of his patrol car to confront the man, she said.
The man pushed the officer and took off in the officer's patrol car, headed south on Sixth.
Construction workers nearby said they saw the officer chase after his car while shooting at the man. Worker Jose Segovia said he heard about 10 shots.
Lopez said she didn't know whether the man was shooting back at the officer.
The incident ended a few blocks away when the police car crashed into the side of a northbound Sun Tran public bus.
Pedestrians Nick Chavez and Nichole Mariscal said they saw the police car spin three times and said the driver seemed disoriented as police swarmed around the car with their guns drawn.
Officers told the man to put his hands up, and they handcuffed him, the witnesses said.
The front of the police car was crushed, and the front bumper was torn off.
The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he died from injuries, Lopez said. His name was not released.
Police didn't immediately say whether the man suffered any gunshot wounds.
The victims of the attempted carjackings, the officer and the 14 people on the bus were not injured, Lopez said.
With four crime scenes to preserve and analyze, and with numerous witnesses to question, "this is going to be a very lengthy investigation," Lopez said Monday evening.
Police are expected to release the name of the officer who fired at the man today. He will be placed on paid leave pending an internal investigation, as is standard procedure after officer-involved shootings.
