人生是不是也是这样，当你有机会接受一个其实还不错的OFFER，但一直听说另外一个
地方更好。你将这个OFFER 拒了。等你收到那个人人羡慕的OFFER时，发现这个比你拒
掉的那个差远了，但是你也回不去了。本来没有第一个OFFER的比较，或许你会开开心
心地接受了走。但是有第一个OFFER在这儿，虽然你也接受了，但是心里就总是有些不

case; but with life, if it happened, it happened, you can never go back.
From the natural science point of view (borrowing from the movie
Interstellar), in a normal physical space, there are three dimensions, say,
X, Y, and Z; but time is not one of them. One reason is that, for space
dimensions, you can traverse in both directions, back and forth, minus and
plus (heck, you can even go back to zero, the “beginning”); but for time,
you can only go one direction, always plus, ever increasing, ever elapsing,
and you can never go back (“going back” is History, which is social
science, by the way. You can view the past; you can learn from the past; but
you can never live the past again).
So, from that point of view, “加油” is a spatial equation; whereas “人生
” is a temporal equation.

两个加油站都落空了。第一个加油站贵是贵些，不过是最后一根稻草，一定得抓住。
再说，我晚上又路过这1.99/GL的加油站，已经涨到2.09/GL了。此加油站非彼加油站了
。1.99/GL的时代过去了。

go back to the first one, since it is only “两个BLOCK” away, and you could
still get that cheaper gas. So, it’s not the question of whether you can
or can’t, it’s just you don’t want to; but with “人生”, you can’t,
whether you want to or not.
In any rate, my point is, for “加油”, you can always drive around, back
and forth, in any direction, until you find the “cheapest” gas (this is of
course without the help of GasBuddy, and defeats the purpose of saving
money, but that’s whole another story); but it is certainly not the case
for “人生”.
Um, sounds like you are trying to transform a spatial equation into a

help you solve “temporal equations” such as “人生”, because, there is
nothing, nobody, that can “repair / change” the past, and/or predict the

空间，抗战就是这么胜的。我在买卖提也是这样，我可以让出空间给这帮卢瑟，但我最
后一定会赢得时间。如果敌人在时间上不存在了，他的空间也就都归我了。老毛让日本
鬼子多占地盘还是很英明的，至少对于他后来差不多成了皇帝是这样。

不同的组合奖导致人生的不同。
比如我遇到的第一个加油站，油价是2.16/Gal，没加。到第二个加油站，1.99/GAL，我
加了。我估计就志得意满地走了。
如果第一个加油站1.99/GAL我加了，后来看见第二个加油站是2.16/GAL，我估计也是洋
洋得意的走了。
这两种情况都是WINNER。唯有我的那种情况是LOSER啊。

cheaper gas), or you may lose some (having to buy more expensive gas).
But “人生” is NOT about winning or losing.
If you ask a thousand people what life is about, you may get a thousand
different answers.
Yes, you are absolutely right: 不同的组合将导致人生的不同. We have different
parents, were born in different places, on different days, have different
education, experience different paths, and etc. etc. That’s why there are
all those different views and different answers.
And, actually, when you think life is either winning or losing, and trying
to keep scores on everything, everyone in your life, you are already lost.
But if you live your life meaningfully and purposefully, then you have
already won the best prize in your life.
So, you may ask, what is the meaning and purpose of life? Well, that is the
question everyone has to find answers by themselves – that, actually, is
