d********1 发帖数: 77 | 1 Wife was doing neck MRI recently, and the image showed a nodule on the right
thyroid gland. So an ultra-sound was done as suggested. Based on ultra-
sound, that nodule on the right thyroid gland was 2cm in diameter (she also
has a <1cm nodule on her left thyroid gland, based on ultra-sound).
So the surgeon did a fine needle aspiration (biopsy), and the result was
something like “atypical cell arrangement”. He said there are usually 4
possibilities coming out of the fine needle aspiration: 1) clearly no
problem; 2) Thyroid cancer; 3) atypical; 4) not enough cells were taken, re-
do fine needle aspiration.
He said the cell arrangement was neither normal, nor typical Thyroid cancer
type. And he suggested removing the right Thyroid, because it is potentially
Thyroid cancer. He also said when he was doing the fine needle aspiration,
he felt the nodule was not smooth, but rather “sandy”.
Any comments/suggestions?

do the surgery. Good luck.

getting a clear diagnosis from a repeat needle biopsy is very slim.

What is your impression on this situation? What is the "normal" posibility
of Thyroid cancer when getting this "atypical cell arrangement"?

| l*h 发帖数: 4124 | 5 because there is a nodule, it is clearly not normal. but some nodules do not
need treatment. the determination requires the overall evaluation by the
surgeon. if he feels it is more likely a cancer, then go for an open biopsy.
if the open biopsy is suggestive of a cancer, he can proceed to do the full
procedure.
thyroid cancers have better prognosis in young patients than in elder ones.

The surgeon also suggested this approach (as well as other options).
BTW, my wife is 34 years old.
