children), visual implants is still at a very early stage of R&D, so that's
not very practical. For more info see:

The parents might be better off focusing on the usual aids for the blind.
Also, a less novel skill is echolocation (like bats) which some people have
been able to learn & use:

cause blindness.

On top of that, preterm babies are susceptible to retinopathy of prematurity, another possible cause. Oxygen supplementation is a minor risk factor here, but not the main reason.

I think the condition that you mentioned might be retinopathy of prematurity
(ROP). I am not sure how old is the infant when the baby is born.
Premature baby certainly is exposed to a lot of problems.
ROP and hyperbilirubinemia are just two of them. Hyperbilirubinemia (yellow
baby) mostly causes damage in the brain, a condition called kernicterus.
That is why the baby has to undergo phototheraphy. ROP is largely
associated with Oxygen over exposure. It is not a result of photother |
