director，coordinator，PA，PA student都谈了无数次，虽然对于大部分来说不像cs
那么短平快，需要付出更多的时间和金钱，但是也仍希望share一些我这两年收集到的
信息，算是给寻求转行之路的各位提供一点点新的思路。
What is a PA?
一般人知道的PA是physician assistant，作为另一种“PA”，pathologist assistant
因为其behind the scene的工作形式，更加不为人所知，我曾经跟一位PA聊天的时候她
提到，她快80岁的爹至今总是告诉别人“My daughter is a nurse”……..如果非要区
分，我们可以把pathologist assistant叫做PathA，但是平时我们在医院或者lab，确
实仅简称之为PA。从1995年起，NACCLS才开始accredit PA programs，所以这个行业的
历史也还不算太长。
Pathologist assistant is a highly trained allied healthcare professional.
Similar to physician assistant who works under the direction of physician,
pathologist assistant is supervised by phathologist (who also work behind
the scene and have no direct patient contact).
What does a PA do?
PA的工作主要涵盖两个领域，surgical pathology和autopsy pathology。
大部分PA从事的是surgical pathology的工作，主要是preparation，description and
dissection of human tissue specimens。这些specimens小到colonoscopy取下的
polyps，shaved biopsy of skin，fine needle aspiration of breast etc.，大到1
feet长的intestine，能装满一脸盆的乳房组织，截肢下来的手脚和各种bones。只要能
想到的身体部分，几乎都会在PA面前出现。这些PA处理并记录的specimen之后会交给
histology lab进行进一步的处理和检验（histotechnologist /HTL负责之后的
processing, embedding, microtomy and staining，如果有人对histotechnology感兴
趣，我也可以另外介绍），或者根据pathologist的要求送交flow cytometry，
immunohistochemistry lab。另外还有intraoperative frozen section，病人还躺在
隔壁手术室病床上，切下的组织则需要快速的处理并交由在场的pathologist检验。
以上这些PA主要在医院，各种reference lab或者government healthcare system工作。
小部分PA进行autopsy pathology的工作。顾名思义就是postmortem examination，在
大部分医院这部分工作是pathologist residents承担的，但是在一些private lab，PA
是autopsy的主力。我在surgical pathology/gross room的经验多一些，下学期才会进
入morgue。
在一些大学的附属医院的地方，PA承担一部分teaching工作，比如我们这里的cadaver
lab都是PA进行教学和示范的。 |
