The University of Nebraska Medical Center has worked for years to develop
significant partnerships in China. The result includes research
collaboration, faculty and student exchanges ,enhanced education, business
investment :
2000:
Eppley Cancer Center begins exchangeFaculty exchange program begins between
UNMC’s Eppley Cancer Center and Shanghai University, marking the first time
the Chinese government has awarded and funded a faculty exchange program
between a Chinese medical school and a U.S. medical school. The two-fold
program will promote international exchanges and develop new ways to
diagnose, treat and prevent cancers. Chinese researchers in the field of
immunotherapy research will assist UNMC researchers in the development of
tumor vaccines and other novel approaches to treatment. UNMC researchers
will gain access to a much larger sample of cancer cases, called a major
need of Eppley researchers.
2004:
Talk begins of student exchangesTom Rosenquist, Ph.D., then vice chancellor
of research at UNMC, Jialin Zheng, M.D., and Dan Monaghan, Ph.D., set out to
discuss collaboration with scientific and student research training
exchanges in China. Although UNMC has had academic agreements with various
Chinese universities for more than 25 years, Dr. Rosenquist believes this is
the beginning of the first integrated and comprehensive, medical center-
wide partnership.
June 2004:
Pact makes UNMC a referral resourceUNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center form
a partnership with the Central Hospital of China National Petroleum
Corporation in Beijing to exchange medical information and education,
specifically in the areas of cancer treatment, bone marrow transplantation
and radiology. UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center hope to become a
referral resource for Central Hospital of China patients who seek medical
care in the United States
June 2004:
Shanghai pact creates exchange programUNMC forms an exchange program with
Shanghai Second Medical University (later renamed Shanghai Jiao Tong
University School of Medicine) to collaborate on biomedical research,
education and patient care. The program also will facilitate other cultural
and business partnerships between communities in Shanghai and Nebraska.
June 2004:
Biomedical graduate program beginsUNMC signs an agreement with the graduate
school of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing to pursue a joint
graduate program in biomedical-related studies. The partnership will involve
faculty exchanges and student internships as a way to develop collaborative
research projects and to further graduate training on both campuses.
2005:
Asia Pacific Rim Development Program foundedUNMC establishes the Asia
Pacific Rim Development Program. Jialin Zheng, M.D., director of the program
and now assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of the
UNMC Departments of Pharmacology/ Experimental Neuroscience and Pathology/
Microbiology, says it will enhance UNMC's outreach toward China and the
Asian-Pacific regions -- areas undergoing massive economic growth.
October 2005:
Chinese medical students begin historic rotations at UNMCThree medical
students and the deputy dean of academic affairs from Shanghai Second
Medical University, now known as Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of
Medicine, become the first to take part in an exchange agreement with UNMC.
The Chinese medical students will become the first to do clinical rotations
in the United States and then graduate from a major Chinese medical school
under an eight-year American-style training curriculum.
April 2006:
Nursing exchange beginsUNMC launches a nursing exchange with China. Four
Chinese nursing students spend a month at UNMC. A few months later, four
UNMC graduate students in the College of Nursing spend a month in China. The
College of Nursing also has had exchange programs with Russia, Armenia,
Afghanistan and Jordan.
June 2006:
UNMC invited to international forumUNMC is invited to send 12 graduate
students to the International Student Research Forum in Beijing. It is the
first time that UNMC is invited to be part of the forum.
August 2007:
China delegation visits UNMCA delegation from China's Shanghai Jiao Tong
University School of Medicine visits UNMC, viewing research and clinical
enterprises and discussing future partnerships.
September 2007:
International M.D./Ph.D. program launchesUNMC and Chinese officials launch a
unique international M.D./Ph.D. program and establish the China-U.S. Joint
Research Center for Medical Sciences and Genetics. The agreement expands
existing medical student, nursing student and faculty exchanges, and renews
and expands the UNMC-Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
Partnership Agreement for research. The agreement is finalized during a
visit to three cities in China by seven UNMC faculty members as part of the
Asia Pacific Rim Development Program’s efforts to boost outreach abilities.
April 2008:
House is home to Chinese visitorsUNMC purchases and renovates a three-story
house at 3901 Dewey Ave. to provide a home for students and faculty members
who visit the medical center through the Asia Pacific Rim Development
Program.
July 2008:
UNMC named to preferred listUNMC is named to the China Scholarship Council's
list of preferred U.S. institutions for student exchanges, joining the
likes of Harvard, Yale and Washington University. The council selects and
funds top graduate students from elite Chinese universities to participate
in exchange and research programs at select U.S. institutions.
August 2008:
Pacts create research center, expand M.D./Ph.D. programIn China, UNMC
Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., signs an agreement with the Chinese
Academy of Sciences -- the Chinese equivalent of the National Institutes of
Health -- to form a joint center for research collaboration. Dr. Maurer also
signs an agreement with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine to
initiate a joint M.D./Ph.D. program that allows medical students from the
Chinese university to come to UNMC to earn a Ph.D. degree.
August 2008:
First M.D./Ph.D. student from China begins at UNMCFirst M.D./Ph.D. student
from China arrives at UNMC through a joint program with Shanghai Jiao Tong
University School of Medicine.
September 2008:
Reverse trade mission is a firstChinese and Japanese professionals visit
UNMC as part of the first-ever reverse trade mission under the direction of
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman.
October 2008:
Symposium held for first timeUNMC partners with the Chinese Academy of
Sciences on the first Joint Research Symposium of the China-U.S. Research
Center for Life Sciences. Seven U.S. scientists and six Chinese scientists
made presentations on neuroscience and immunology.
October 2008:
China Council seeks UNMC inputUNMC is among 14 U.S. institutions invited to
advise the China Scholarship Council on development of its international
graduate studies program.
October 2008:
UNMC takes family medicine model to ChinaUNMC introduces family medicine
model to China. The effort, at Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine,
is seen as a potential template for other parts of China.
November 2008:
Shanghai delegation visits UNMCDelegation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University
School of Medicine visits UNMC. The partnership between the two schools has
so far included visits to UNMC by more than 30 students and several faculty
members from China. UNMC has sent 16 nursing students and faculty members,
as well as three medical students, to the Shanghai school. UNMC soon will
begin sending 12 medical students per year. The collaboration is intended to
enhance joint research projects between the two campuses.
August 2009China's consul general visits UNMCChina’s consul general,
Xiongfeng Chen, visits UNMC, along with other officials from China’s
Washington embassy.
September 2009:
Joint research symposium held at UNMC for first timeThe Annual Joint
Research Symposium for the U.S.-China Joint Center for Life Sciences is held
at UNMC for the first time. The first symposium was held the year before in
Beijing.
October 2009;
Lymphoma-Leukemia center opens in ChinaUNMC collaborates with Tianjin
Medical University Cancer Hospital and Institute to found the Sino-U.S.
Center for Lymphoma and Leukemia in Tianjin. The center’s opening is
broadcast throughout China and covered by 36 news agencies. Tissue samples
of difficult cases at Tianjin Hospital will be sent to UNMC to ensure a
proper diagnosis. UNMC will train Tianjin personnel to enhance clinical and
diagnostic skills. The center also will enhance basic and clinical research
collaborations such as parallel clinical trials.
October 2009:
Chancellor receives honor in ChinaChancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is
awarded an honorary professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in
Beijing. Previous recipients of the honor include former U.S. President
George H.W. Bush and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. During the trip, Dr
. Maurer chairs and presents the third International Conference on World
Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Also, he and three
other UNMC leaders speak at the 2009 Suzhou International Clinic Forum at
Suzhou University.
October 2009:
UNMC opens Beijing officeUNMC opens an office at the Chinese Academy of
Sciences in Beijing, becoming one of just a few U.S. universities and the
first NU campus to have such an office. The office is expected to help UNMC
recruit top Chinese students and faculty to participate in collaborations
and joint programs; and support UNMC faculty and students who work and study
in China as well as other aspects of the medical center's Chinese
collaborations.
November 2009:
500 scientists attend UNMC-sponsored symposium in ChinaA symposium sponsored
by UNMC and the Tianjin Institute draws leading experts and more than 500
scientists from around the world.
December 2009
Family medicine training center foundedUNMC and Xi'an Jiao Tong University
School of Medicine establish a one-of-a-kind training center for family
practice physicians in China. The Sino-U.S. Training Center for General
Practitioners will help each university understand and improve family
medicine. UNMC's family medicine department will train Xi’an Jiao Tong
faculty and help the Chinese university develop curriculum to educate
Chinese-adapted family medicine practitioners. The agreement also
establishes a faculty and student exchange program.
December 2009:
UNMC leaders honoredTwo UNMC vice chancellors – Don Leuenberger and Tom
Rosenquist – are awarded visiting professorships at Chinese institutions.
April 2010:
Global health center approvedThe University of Nebraska Board of Regents
approves creation of a Center for Global Health and Development in the UNMC
College of Public Health. The center expands students' exposure to global
health issues and enables international research and practice partnerships
for UNMC faculty. The center is part of a consortium that will offer
students and faculty opportunities in public health programs in Bangladesh,
China, Kenya and Egypt.
October 2010:
UNMC-Tongji pact to enhance education, researchUNMC establishes a new
agreement with Tongji University to enhance medical education and research
at both institutions. The agreement includes a joint medical education
program; translational research collaborations; opportunities for students
from the Shanghai-based university to participate in the one-of-a-kind joint
M.D./Ph.D. program that UNMC formed with other Chinese institutions; and
courses at Tongji University taught by UNMC faculty members. Tongji
University awards an honorary professorship to Chancellor Harold M. Maurer,
M.D.
October 2010:
Pact extends council's supportSecond agreement with the China Scholarship
Council extends support to visiting scholars, junior faculty members and
clinical faculty members as well as graduate students and postdoctorate
fellows.
October 2010UNMC students, faculty attend research forumNine UNMC students
and three faculty members participate in the 2010 International Student
Research Forum in Beijing.
October 2010:
UNMC launches Chinese-language web siteUNMC launches a Chinese-language web
site through its Beijing office to let Chinese students and institutions
learn more about UNMC and assist the medical center in recruiting top
Chinese students.
2011:
UNMC's Zheng meets president of ChinaJialin Zheng, M.D., professor of
pharmacology and experimental neurosciences and director of UNMC's Asia
Pacific Rim Development Program, visits with the president of China, Jiantao
Hu, during the Chinese leader's visit to Washington. Dr. Zheng also
participates in President Barack Obama's welcoming ceremony for Hu and
attends a meeting between Hu and 40 Chinese-American leaders from U.S.
universities.
August 2011:
NU Foundation supports research programUniversity of Nebraska Foundation
provides $250,000 in grant awards for international research programs at
UNMC focused on diabetes, environmental health factors and lymphoma. The
awards include $100,000 to support an ongoing and collaborative research
program between UNMC and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is a leader
in genetics research.
October 2011:
Symposium held in BeijingUNMC, the Beijing Institutes of Life Science and
the Chinese Academy of Sciences hold the annual Joint Research Symposium of
the China-U.S. Research Center for Life Sciences on Cancer and Stem Cells in
Beijing.
October 2011:
Chinese daily: UNMC a top schoolUNMC reported as a top school recruiting
Chinese students in story in the country’s largest daily newspaper that
also includes mentions of Cambridge and Oxford.
October 2011:
Maurer speaks at Shandong eventUNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is
asked to speak on behalf of academic leaders throughout the world. The
audience is a stadium of 4,000 people celebrating the 100th anniversary of
Shandong University School of Medicine.
October 2011:
UNMC conducts event for 250 in ChinaA UNMC contingent conducts symposiums
for more than 250 Chinese residents and family medicine physicians in the
densely populated Shanghai and Xi'an.
April 2012:
UNMC medical students learn traditional Chinese medicineFour UNMC fourth-
year medical students complete one-month rotations in traditional Chinese
medicine in Shanghai. The rotations are a continuation of a UNMC program
that started in 2008. Since 2008, UNMC has sent 18 fourth-year medical
students for one-month rotations in China.
August 2012:
Extensive partnership finalizedUNMC and Tongji University finalize an
agreement to create one of the most extensive partnerships ever between U.S.
and Chinese academic institutions. The Shanghai-U.S. Health Science
Initiative is a collaborative health science partnership that will involve
medicine, physical therapy/rehabilitation, nursing, dentistry, public health
and pharmacy – and will provide myriad opportunities for students and
faculty.
August 2012:
2 med students from China begin at UNMC.Two Chinese students enroll in
medical school at UNMC. It is the first time the Chinese government has
funded medical training in the U.S.
