Job Details: Description: The Charles McMathias, Jr National Study Center
for Trauma and EMS of the Shock Trauma and Anesthesiology Research Organized
Research Center (STAR ORC) at the University of Maryland Baltimore, School
of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and capable
Research Fellow interested in Emergency Medical Services to work as part of
a multi-disciplinary team, requiring self-direction and proactive
communication skills. This position is part of a collaborative contract with
the state EMS system (MIEMSS), specifically working with their data team on
database management, data integrity assessment, data analysis and
interpretation and project development support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Independently pursue collaborative research projects pertaining
to emergency medical systems.

· Works with project manager(s) to determine the most effective
method for data collection, coding, reporting and analysis.
· Establishes and maintains database files, analysis programs and
customized/standardized reports, including: data dictionaries, and report
distribution lists
· Performs data searches and analysis to generate standard and
custom reports using statistical applications. Provides interpretation/
summarization of analysis results including methodology or limitations of
results
· Design database systems and programs which include access
methods, access time, file structures, device allocation, validation checks,
statistical methods, and security.
· Analyze data requirements. Develop database structures to
support specific applications
· Monitor, analyze, and verify data to ensure data integrity.
Conduct file and data dictionary maintenance
· Develop and document data models.
· Develop policies and procedure for, and assist in data transfers
or sharing of files with remote resources.
· Produce reports and develop manuscripts for submission
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· MD or PhD
· Familiarity with EMS system terminology and procedures
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
BASELINE:
· Basic understanding and knowledge of scientific/medical
terminology and research theory.
· Ability to independently perform or lead research activities,
while communicating effectively with all customers/partners
· Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using SPSS
, SAS as well as other work processing, spreadsheet and database management
software applications
· Ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects and information
obtained
· Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
· Ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in
areas of responsibility
· Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
· Provide support to senior-level staff/faculty.
· Ability to collaborate with clients and/or other members of the
team.
· Ability to perform database maintenance tasks, develop access
routines, and maintain dictionary
· Assist with the development of system and user documentation
· Knowledge of formal data structure design, relational database
design, file structures and access methods.
INTERMEDIATE:
· Skill in programming statistical and data analysis systems
· Ability to develop and disseminate policies and procedures as
indicated to document and improve processes
· Knowledge of data modeling concepts
· Ability to design data structures to maximize efficiency and
flexibility
· Assist in designing project scope, dataflow diagrams and entity-
relationship diagrams in preparation for development of new systems or
modification to existing systems
· Develop system documentation for modifications to existing
systems and new development
· Assist in developing data security policies and procedures and
disaster recovery plans
ADVANCED:
· Provide mentoring to those with less knowledge of database
applications
· Demonstrated ability to conduct research and produce reports and
manuscripts
· Ability to serve in a lead capacity providing guidance and
direction over a work group or project team
· Demonstrated data administration experience
· Responsible for mission critical systems
· Design project scope, dataflow diagrams, entity-relationship
diagrams
ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILLS:
· Familiarity with relational databases (e.g.: Microsoft Access,
SQL, Oracle), statistical programs (e.g.: SAS. SPSS, STATA), GIS (e.g.:
ArcGIS)
