yf 发帖数: 272 | 1 Today I interviewed three candidates.
The package of the candidates includes one detailed form for me to fill and
the CV, rotation evaluation, USMLE reports, and recommendation letters.
The form for me to fill is like this:
Scores
Questions to ask the candidates: if you have different opinions from the
seniors, what will you do? How do you prepare for a presentation? How do you
educate a patient to be compliant?etc.
A scoring list : personality, appearance and conduct, EQ, knowledge,
leadership.
The score is like: do not rank, solid candidate with minor concern, superior
candidate with potential of chief.
Score is 1.0 to 10.0
What is the candidate's future plan: fellowship? General internal medicine?
Other?
What did they as you?
All the candidates wee from our own medical school , High scores, 230s to
260s. They have research experience.
First one is American Caucasian, second one is a Chinese but immigrated to
US when very young, third is a US born Indian. Chinese is a sweet and smart
girl but too shy. Indian has highest score and best evaluation, very
outgoing and sincere, definitely best one. Caucasian has high scores too.
All of them want to do fellowships. They applied to 40-50 programs, got 25+
interview invitations! going to 12-15 interviews.
My feelings: CMGs don't waste money on mid-west programs. Unless you have
strong connections.
New-York community programs are still your best chance.
Chinese are too shy. The parents need to train their kids to have strong
communication skills, train them how to smile, how to talk, how to present,
how to convince people.
Why every parent is pushing kids to the Chinese school, and music school or
whatever if their kids cannot talk appropriately?
What is the use of grasping double triple languages if they cannot use one
language well?
Doctors are different from scientists, communication skills are way more
important. |

d**o 发帖数: 618 | 10 1) Not sure if your med school is crazy, or the IM is all going crazy this
year. With their background and high score, they should apply to just 10-20
programs and go to <10 interviews.
2) I think they know by now that they over-applied, and most likely are just
using the interviews at home school for practice purpose.
3) That Chinese girl might be shy/nervous just because this is her first
interview. I disagree with your generalization. The Chinese-race students in
my class are certainly among the openest and friendliest, while a few
Indian girls have been among the shyest.
4) Shy people can be great doctors too, and there are certainly a few shy
students in every med school class. There are many specialties perfect for
the shy people :) |
|
|
d**o 发帖数: 618 | 11 Also would like to give my two cents for interviews:
1) TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE throughout the interview! I cannot believe how
many applicants are so addicted to smartphone and messaging nowadays,
sometimes even when the PD is talking. While some attendings may be okay
with this, many are old-school and annoyed by this. So just turn it off, so
that there isn't even a chance that you may be distracted by a missed call
or a message.
2) DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT ANYTHING! Again, I cannot believe that even some
American Caucasians are making such mistakes, e.g. badmouth the other
programs where they have interviewed. It is such a big no-no. It'd be my
nightmare to work with those people during my residency.
3) You will be asked many times which med school you come from. If you are a
CMG, briefly mention your home school in China, but immediately follow that
you did XYZ clinical experience/rotation in XYZ town in the U.S., and/or
worked with med students from XYZ school. That builds connections with
residents and/or other applicants. I saw an applicant from Caribbean who did
this, and I think he is very savvy. |

I scored the Indian girl second. She likes to do cardiology or ICU. And I
totally agree with her. She will be a good chief resident. I told her she

I scored the American Caucasian lowest, because he put his leg high up and

by applying to so many programs. In my year, people applying to IM applied
to 10-20 and went to about 8-10. IM interviews are laid back, at least from
my prelim experiences. They don't usually grill you, but actually wanted to
show you the best side of the program and attract you in. The questions are
friendly. Keep in mind mean questions or technical questions are bad signs.
It means either the interviewer doesn't know how to do this job, or the
program is not warm and fuzzy, let alone supportive. So you should move on. |

618 | 40 1) From my own experience, it is fairly common to ask applicants about their
other interview offers. This is a common topic during lunch/dinner with
residents, if not during the formal interview with attendings. Whether or
not this is 100% professional is another question.
2) If asked, give a diplomatic answer first. If it appears that you have to
name another school, you can say XYZ school and the school you're
interviewing at are the most attractive. You can say XYZ school is extremely
strong at issue A, and this school is extremely strong at issue B, but you
don't know if this school is also strong at issue A. This gives the
interviewer a chance to present his/her school, also, makes you look
stronger as you're considering not just one school.
3) Obviously, you want to be a little smarter and name a school that is on
par with the school you're interviewing at. Hopkins is well known as the top
4 in IM, and only MGH/BWH/UCSF are comparable in reputation. Assuming that
yf is not in these 3 other schools, and this interviewee just named Hopkins
without talking about its weak points (e.g. unsafe location in Baltimore),
then it is obvious that this interviewee is more interested in Hopkins than
her home school. Any other interviewer would probably recommend the same
thing, and cross off this interviewee as unlikely to match to this school.
It is not smart for this interviewee to name Hopkins to begin with.
4) As revenge (I'm kidding), you can reverse the table and put resident/
attending in a similar uncomfortable situation :)) Ask the residents and
attendings what their home med schools are, and why they choose to leave
there and come to here, why they think this school is better than their home
schools. Imitate their replies in your future answers. |
